"Check In" here before and after your gigs this weekend!

Last night we went to The BoatHouse in Stockton, Missouri, a place we have played at several times since last fall. Kind of felt like we weren't quite "getting there" the first couple of sets; the monitors were distorting, which just kept bugging me to no end, and my bass had too much treble in the mains, but I kept acting like I was having a great time, hoping it would start to rub off on the crowd. (Sometimes acting helps!)

By the middle of the third set, things got to going good and we breezed through the rest of the night with people singing along, waving their hands and lighters in the air, girls getting up close to the guitar player and flirting (a couple of them asked me if he was married, they don't ask if I am married, hmmm..) and we had a pretty good time overall.

In a couple of weeks we've got a gig at a floating restaurant/bar on Stockton Lake. We played there a few times last year. You set up outside ; it's like a boat dock but really wide with tables and an area to dance in front of the tables. If an amp fell over backwards, it would be in the lake! But it's a great place to play, so I hope the weather warms up around here and people are at the lake in their boats. It can be absolutely packed around there at times.

All this can sure be a lot of fun at times, don't you agree?

2 clubdates Saturday. Got a call at 10:30 am asking me to show up 1 hour early to cover the cocktail hour. 1st job, a piece of cake. On the way to the 2nd job, the leader was pulled over for driving erraticly and was almost arrested for outstanding tickets. High pressure wedding at NYC's Waldorf Astoria. A 14 hour day w/ 9 hours of playing.

Second show of a jazz quartet I started. We started out as a trio but picked up a sax player. And hes pretty well know so hopefully well have a bigger crowd. Its hard getting gigs here. Not alot of places to play. And the ones that do feature jazz I belive want backgroud type fell. Like all ballads. Which we do. But we mix it up. WE do some bop tunes, ballads, jazz blues, and some more contemperary jazz. Sorry for the small rant. Its been on my mind, and is killing some of the mojo. Ill keep it positive though. Show is Saturday night in Rockford, Il Got my fingers crossed.

well last night we played for about 150 people at this club in buffalo called nietzsche's. its a great place and and a really interesting club. i learned a lot at this show. #1 i need to stretch and warm up before each gig. usually i do!! but for some reason i didnt last night.

maybe cause there is no back stage area, but i still could have found a space to do my warm ups.

then we started, and man, i was not grooving and all!! i really was hitting bad notes at times and my drummer even said to me, "hey man wheres your groove tonight" because we are a very tight band, but for whatever reason i didnt have it on tonight.


either way, i'm sure most people in the crowd didnt know, the energy was great all night, and i learned that from it! plus it doesnt help that for our show rehearsal i played a 4 string jazz bass, and i dont ever play fours but i wanted to try it. so i played my 5 at the show and my fingers were a little off..


but heres the KICKER!! after the show, i tell my guitarist "good job man" and give him a high five

then i go to my drummer who was outside loading into his truck, i said "good job man" and gave him a high five, and this is what he says to me..

"yeah horrible job tonight..." i could talk more about this but i dont feel like typing, either way, we're all good friends, and we move on and GROOVE!

yeah and its not even that the show was bad, we just know it could have been better.....

Well thats the first and last time I play a venue with a noise limiter.

The power cut on the first set twice. We came real close the second set but none of us could really get into the gig because we were constantly watching the lights flicker on and off on that damn thing!

Never mind though. It went well and we got lots of positive feedback :)

Set went well, guitarists had a bit of tech problem, changed cables and effects rack.

Group who opened for us sounded just like Tool! Close your eyes that was Maynard and the others up there!!!

Then some people said they were better cause supposidly we sounded like tool too!!!...UGH!

Don't get me wrong I like tool, I just didn't think that we sounded that much like them...We are not really technical...the other band was, so we were improperly matched...mmm I thought we did well. Anyways,Anytime no one leaves is a good show!!!

EXCEPT!! on leaving my girl was trashed so we waited a while to leave, so she could sober up. An hour or so later...FLAT TIRE!!!

Changing a tire at 4am is not my idea of a good time!!!

Oh well, I felt good about how we played, very tight...

Was the temp below freezing? For max flat-tire suckage, it's gotta be below freezing.
Last time I had a flat at a bar, it was below freezing, and I smacked my knuckle real good. When I got a good look at the tire the next day, I found that the sidewall had been cut with a knife. :spit:
