Well the gig went great! We had a great turn out. Im my post i was worried no one would show. Were a relativly new jazz group in town. This was our second show. The guitar and the sax player were hot!!! Great solos. I had a few too. All in all i was pretty satisfied. I even had my first "hey can I sit in" experience. While i was playing this guy was coming up to me looking at my book of music. This of course caught my attention. During break i saw him and asked if he was a bass player. He said yes. Then he asked if he could sit on a song. I said "sure you dig jazz"? This was his answer. Yeah i cant read music, but i know the three chord blues stuff. Well I told him we dont use those changes. Mostly jazz blues changes. And everything else is out of the real book so if ya cnat read then.... Well that ended that. He was pretty mad about that. Any was so great night all together!
Not even close. For MAX flat-tire suckage, it's gotta be Phoenix in August 4:30 p.m., 120 degrees. So hot that the pavement will burn your flesh. For real. After a very painful experience, I started keeping a cardboard box and blanket in my truck for summertime tire changes. Then I got wise and ponied up the cash for AAA.
Yeah, but it's a dry heat!
Around here we get the high 90s in both temp and humidity. Thankfully it doesn't get to 120 degrees. If it did lots of folks would die.
I've spent some time in Phoenix, and I'll take 105 and 15% over 95 and 98% any day!

Had a good gig Saturday at The Stables in Westminster MD. Other than the fact that I had to stand behind a PA stack and a lighting pole, everything went well. I played with a pick for most of the night, which worked well with my 18" and 15" speakers. Tasty rib dinner beforehand.
I hadn't realized that my keyboard player's son goes to Va. Tech until he announced it to the crowd (he's OK).
The Crown Regal Band (starring me on bass) will be appearing Saturday night at Harrison's Restaurant/Bar on route 70 near Whiting in lovely Ocean County NJ.
It's out in the middle of nowhere and the average age of the clientel is about 55!
They sure can drink and dance though out there on the edge of the Pine Barrens.
Since it's a bunch of old farts, (so are we, almost), the show is from 8:30 to 12:30.
Sometimes late in the evening some service people will stop in from the neighboring Navel and Air Force bases. When that happens things tend to pick up a little.
Stop by, say you're from TalkBass and I buy ya a drink!

2 dinner dances this weekend.
Forgot a tale of last weekend. One of the girl singers caught the photographer trying to get an upskirt shot of the singer. He was placing the camera down and using the self timer to look up a short skirt. Some people.

Coming up Saturday: rehearse w/my brother and my cousin in the afternoon, then a 2-hour jaunt to Remington VA, another flyspeck town I've never been to before, to play w/ the country band at the American Legion post there. I hope I can find it! 
Pima County Fair on Sunday afternoon (4/29)
We play two 1-hour sets with a 30 min break in between.
We've never played the fair before. The stage we are playing on is good sized and covered. I've seen bands play there before and it should be a good gig.

About to do 4 gigs in 6 days(plus go to day job)
Saturday: Private wedding with very good possibilty of a well-known musician showing up(friend of the family hosting). We cover some of his band's songs. Maybe he'll sit in.
Camera will be at the ready.
We aren't really a wedding band unless you're from Texas....then we can be.

1st gig done. As we were playing a ballad (My One and Only Love) a couple dances over and asks the leader "When this funeral is over, how about something up". I thought it was funny.
Job went great with a SUPER sub-drummer from San Antonio as our regular drummer was on vacation. No train wrecks, no huge flubs, just a consistent timing and great ability to take visual cues on the fly.
When you look out in the audience and see the bride dancing her feet off one minute with a huge smile, later you see Bride's Mom leading a train of people around the dance floor with the same face on, and another song see the Dad's flying around the dance floor with their wives.....you know it's a good one.

Well, I found the gig at the Remington Lions club alright, and it went pretty well. It was the afternoon rehearsal that kinda sucked! I had emailed everyone on Friday that I had to leave at 5 for the gig. We were gonna have 3 hours to work, we're gigging next Sat. So the drummer was only a little late, but he was more than a little drunk, at 2 pm. 
About one hour into the rehearsal, he announced that he had to leave at 4 for his gig. 
This was a surprise to us! He didn't seem to realise that we were pissed about this. The keyboard player was not arriving & couldn't be reached by phone. Turned out he was out bike riding with his daughter. He ended up 90 minutes late, giving us a big 30 minutes with the entire band. 
My cousin decided it was a good time to work on a song of his, very complicated, that we won't be playing at our next two gigs. So all in all, it was a load of wasted time, and not much useful work getting done. I bolted at 5 sharp, and I was glad to get out of there and go to my country gig!

I just did a gig at the Canyon Inn in Yorba Linda, CA Friday and Saturday nights. I played my Low End Jazz for most of the weekend, a few sets with my F bass. Schroeder 1212L cabinet, Alembic preamp and QSC amp. The gig went well, the band played good and the crowd danced and made merryment, at the end I got a little money out of it. As ususal we give our tip jar to the bar... they give us a free dinner and free drinks, it's for good bar MOJO
My band had a gig last night - place called Royal Pizza. Definitely not your typical pizza joint, it was actually a really nice bar, and it was PACKED. It was the first time I've ever had to go through the PA without any backline, so that was pretty new - I could barely hear myself on stage, but afterwards I was told that it was cranking out in the audience. Besides that, I had to get used to the fact that my mic was about 10 times hotter than the one my lead singer used, so I had to stay about 20cm away from it. The worst part was when I was singing along to our cover of "Dr. Rock" and my voice cracked
That was embarrassing! lol
The only thing that made the gig really noteworthy though was the hottie grooving along to us for the whole set, and afterwards I decided to get her number. Probably the hottest girl I've ever seen in my life!

Ugh. I get to play a Sunday night show tonight. We go first, and it's at 10:00pm! Luckily, I only live about 20 minutes from the club. My bandmates live about 45 minutes away.
I was approached by another band to do the show. I thought it would be a Sunday afternoon gig (we've done some and had good success with them). I was able to secure a third band that we like a lot and have gigged with a few times. So after confirming, it turns out that it's a late show. Ugh.
To top it off, last time we played there, it was a pay to play without being stated as such. Apparently they take $75 off the top to pay the sound guy. Last time, we made $60 and had to pay the additional $15 to cover the rest. Needless to say, I'm not expecting much tonight.
So not only do I have that to deal with, but after booking the gig, I realized that my wife would be out of town this weekend and with 2 kids, getting a babysitter on a Sunday at 10 would be rough. Luckily, my friend's wife was able to help me out with this most unfortunate situation.
Oh, yeah, did I mention this place is kind of a dorky place for gigs anyway???

We played a "beach party" at a bar in central Illinois. The dumped 12 tons of sand in this back room and it was truly one of the most fun shows I've ever played. The pics tell the story:

Well, I had 2 gigs this past weekend, and they both went well. The band was clickin' both nights, and everyone had a great time.
More importantly for me, this was the first weekend to use my new Berg IP112 and HT112 set-up. I used the IP112 alone for a couple of gigs last week, but this week the HT112 showed up and I got to use the full rig.........WOW! Now I understand all the buzz about the Bergantino stuff completely! I'm using my Phil Jones Bass Buddy for a preamp, and that works out OK, but I'm searching for something a little different, probably a tube preamp of some sort......maybe the Alembic, or Aguilar.......hmmm. No matter what, this past weekend, and Saturday in particular, has been the happiest I've been with my sound with any small combo type setup. I can honestly say I was just as pleased as if I had hauled out my Mesa Boogie 400+ and the 4x10 cab..........but my back didn't hurt nearly as much, and I fit it all in the trunk of a 330Ci.....try that with a 4x10 cab!
I'm giggin' this Saturday at a rockin' little biker bar kinda place, and I can't wait to try it out again in a gig situation.
