"Check In" here before and after your gigs this weekend!

Had a gig Friday night! It went pretty well. We missed a couple of endings and the drummer played a handful of tunes really really fast. I played pretty well all night except for the encore tune (We Are Family) which is in A and for some reason, my setlist had it notated in E so we screwed that one up! Other than that, not a bad night!

Saturday's show was pretty good. Not the best, but ok.

Downsides: We had a guest singer up. We have her up fairly regularly. But she was *very* negative with the crowd! She told them they were boring, dead, etc. So...about a third got mad and left. Then this redneck chick (Rocky Mountains, tight cotton shirt with cutouts, the whole deal) got real drunk, convinced herself someone had stolen her money, and had a ring-tailed, blue-eyed hissy fit in the bar. So, she drove off half the people who remained.

Upsides: Fans of my old band (The Knowbodys) came, and stayed all night, and cheered and were awesome. They've invited us to play a huge party at the end of May. Also, a reporter came from the local paper to meet us and do a review of our performance. We'll be in the paper this week! Thankfully, he left before Guest Singer & Drunk Redneck Girl drove off the crowd.

As he bid us goodbye, he walked up to me, pointed his finger in my chest, and declared, "You're GOOD!!! Oh man, you are awesome!"

That's COOL!!! Did anyone video it?

You know, all that stone, if the architecture is right, can be wonderful, acoustically. I think its in the shape of the ceilings. There's a stairway in the main building of The University of Texas that's like that. All the choral groups like to have informal practices there, and they do the Christmas music in there. All stone...marble and granite and limestone, but with vaulted ceilings.

The boss came right up and introduced himself to me before I even had my coat off. Nice guy, not a typical jerk type.
I got a decent sound and we played well. Turns out a friend of ours from another band lives right nearby, and he sat in and sang 2 songs.
I think the best part of the night was Melody, the cute adorable 5-year-old girl who insisted on chatting me up while I was setting up. She wanted to know all about what I was doing, and to tell me important stuff like how her daddy passes gas all the time at home. Her mom kept coming over to see if Melody was "bothering" me. They were there to eat and visit daddy, who bartends there. I assured mom that Melody's company was a pleasure, not a bother. They left before we started, but daddy was there all night, and was pretty blitzed by the end of the night. :rolleyes:
So overall a very good night, and good intro to a new place. I expect we'll be back! I'll be looking forward to it. :cool:

Yeah, impromptu guest singers frequently end up just dancing with the bassist, since they can't actually sing.

But this girl...she gets up with us regularly. We call her our "drive-by singer". She's good...sultry, smokey, whiskey-blues voice. But she must *not* be allowed to *talk* into the mic! She's a pushy broad (I love her, but she's a pushy broad), and she's blunt as a bludgeon. Girls like her should not be allowed access to a public address systems except at political rallies, where their ballsy attitude can do some good.

We weren't at a political rally!

Not really a gig, but I ended up doing a few demos at the BSX booth at NAMM on Saturday. I wasn't on a bass gear mission like most of the TB'ers, but I couldn't resist talking to the guy who built my electric upright. Nor could I resist trying one of his new ones, which meant I was soon playing in front of quite a few (hundreds of) people. I had a great time chatting up passersby, but I probably would have been a bit nervous if I had realized who I was talking to.:cool:

The show was unreal. I'm watching Todd Johnson playing at the AccuGroove booth, and Stanley Clarke sidles up next to me to check it out. I come outta the can, and Marcus Miller's slapping away on Tal Wilkenfeld's bass at the EBS booth -- while she's playing it too! There were just famous, great players everywhere, what a hoot!

Back to the wine bar this weekend. I'm looking forward to the quiet actually.:cool:

I got a gig tonight with my band at a cozy little coffee shop we drop in on on occasion. The stage is absolutely tiny, but even with a guitarist/singer, bassist, drummer, keyboard player, and sax player standing literally back to back to fit in, it should be pretty fun. Kinda good for the band, too. I always feel so much closer to my band brothers on that stage...

That's really cool... I've been to Warwick castle. Such a cool place. Couldn't imagine playing there. Awesome.:cool:

Playing with my band tonight in Huntington Beach (Gallaghers on Main St/Walnut). This is the second gig for my reggae/dub side project. Good venue in a crowded party area. Should be fun. I'll let you know how it goes.

Ya' know, I kinda forgot to check in last weekend....it was back to work with my regular band, and wound up being a great gig for the band, really tight, played well, good sounding room and the crowd was into it. I like that kind of gig.

This weekend, the regular act is off, but I filled in a couple of weeks ago with a different bunch, and I guess things went OK since they gave me a call again for tomorrow night. Gonna be at a little club up the road, right by the place I lived when I just got out of college. Haven't played there in probably at least ten years, and I bet it hasn't changed a bit.
I'll check in tomorrow and let ya know.

I'm off to the Raddison for our usual 1st weekend of the month gig tonight. There's supposed to be a freaking blizzard, my drummer is hopefully back from NYC, and I am going to go set up right after work. If the hotel is full, it should be a good night, I don't think anyone will be leaving. If it's not full, I think I'll have several hot buttered rums and get a room for the evening.

hahahahhahaha.

I have my first 'gig' on tuesday. More this lil pub that has original jam on a sunday, acoustic on a monday and electric jam night on a tues. Ok so it's only jam night so it doesn't have to be great. which is good since we've had 3 practises since i got my bass last tuesday. so i will have been playing for a total of 2weeks. Ti's ok because i have pretty much learnt the 3 songs we are playing. They'd already written those from the old bassist who is traveling south america this year. However today i found out that we are playing somebody's 18th a week today. that gives me, on top of the first ever playing infront of a bunch of peers easy on criticism and light on compliments nervousness, and the fact i can't actually play, a whole new -you gott learn 5 songs by next friday - jitters. rediculous or what?

btw this is on top of college, a part time job and looking after a friend who is going through a rough time. eeesh.

I had a gig last night, our worst preformance yet. Nobody could tell that I talked too, but any musician Im sure would've noticed. we skipped verses ended songs too early and at one point I got confused and didnt start playing till 1/4 through a song..never ever drinking before a gig again.
