chick vs chick with bass: electric boogaloo

I learned to read music when I was a kid (piano, flute, sax), then took many years away from music while life was happening. Ergo, I forgot most of the music I actually did learn to read. I never learned to play by ear and I'm having to learn that now (I'm such a total bass n00b - right at six months of seriousness and have never gigged). I've never played guitar so watching their hands would likely result in only a lot more confusion.

I have been lucky - when I fill in for my buddy's band at rehearsals if I position myself just so, I can see the drummer's foot (anticipation) and hear the keyboard player when he tells me what key he's going to go to next. When I mess up, they laugh at me and we move on. It's all in good fun. Every now and again, I'll do something right. That's when they add something new for me to learn.

I tend to follow two key rules.

1) Root notes are my friend when I don't know what else to do.

2) If I mess up, playing it twice makes it a new arrangement and not a mistake.

Well, since I have forgotten how to read music 3 times now, I get it.

I am going to share my main rule. You can do whatever the heck you want as long as you are back on a strong ONE consistently.

Hook it up with your 'anticipation', lock up on THE ONE with the drummer. Free form, groove and feel the rest and be back on a strong ONE. They will think you meant every note.
:ninja: ;)

Thank you so much! You're too kind. The armband is actually roses and hummingbirds.

Funny you should mention bass and nude in the same sentence. I'm not typically comfortable in front of the camera at all, but I've been pondering having some artsy pictures made with my instruments. It's an idea more for me than anyone else, but your comment has me thinking... :eyebrow: Perhaps...

You should do it for sure. Even if no one sees them but you, and who knows, even if you think you don't like them now, you might break them out 30 years from now and think, "Look how gorgeous I was then." (not to say that you won't be 30 years from now :D)

Thand-You've gotten better with age. What the heck kind of bass is that? It's wicked-cool.

They already think I MEAN every note - and every joke, every funny made-up lyric (yes, I have a whole bathroom on the right song), and I can make the lead guitarist blush. And EVERY now and again, I pull something totally awesome out of my ear and surprise them all. A few weeks ago, it was the cleavage dip with a hanky that happened before I realized I was standing in front of a mirror, but Saturday it was keeping up with Lady Madonna.

Doesn't Ace and True Value have a better selection of rope?

That might depend on what part of the country you're in. IME the selection tends to vary by store. Although True Value does usually have a nice selection of chain.

Now - if anyone has a great source for leather - that would be good to know. It makes for interesting braided toys.

Thor: Looks like we not only have Bloodwyn Pig influences we also have the same approach to bass playing.

May be a bit worn out of a phrase but let's face it - old guys rule. (So do chick with basses :))

I'll be up your way at Christmas time for a couple of weeks visiting my grandbabies. I'm originally from near St. Louis (but Illinois side). If the weather's not too bad, we might could meet halfway across 70 and have dinner. Bring Erica - the more the merrier.

Hitch a ride? You HAVE to come through GA...there's like no other way out from Fla.:D

Edit: Christmas? I have to pass...rats!

The local HD in strong in the chain dept too. Not to mention many many instruments of fun. Ah... I really do love that store.

Rope burns though. :(
I like to buy a few yards of fleece fabric from Wal-Mart. It's soft and stretchy...can be used for tying and blind-folding, among other things. :D

I don't have the t-shirt website, but can we make one that says "Chicks with Basses. Spoon us."

When used properly rope won't burn, mark some, yes.

Wait, which forum am I loggged into??

I'm glad to see that I'm not alone in my frustration of having to keep re-learning how to read....started when I was 12.

Most people down here seem to use their own modified version of the Nashville Number System, anyway.

If you put a sheet in front of me right now, I swear, my mind would go "Bass Clef? check." Key of-f-f- E? check" mmm "every good boy does fine":scowl:

Atlanta next week Wednesday night to Friday afternoon. Working at the Georgia Tech Convention Center. Fly out Friday evening.

Christmas time, I'll be driving back home, so that's an open door to a fly-by going up or coming back. Dare I ask how far off 75?

Ok opinions differ on this between me and my friends:
