Wow! This thread is blowing up - 5 pages in a day, are you kidding me?!!!

I imagine with all of the positivity surrouding Jimmy's basses, the thread will just continue to grow.

I can truly say that this thread was so valuable for me in determining my next bass, which was to be a "super" jazz if you will. The info/sound clips/video clips provided by all of the members are extremely insightful and really help someone that is unfamiliar with the luthier/builder. I can say that I definitely chose the right bass to go with and thank you guys for the help!

Hey YC, do you know if the Ruben Rodriguez sig RA5 has that oly white shot in nitro or if that's a poly finish?

According to Miko, Ruben's bass is nitro - neck & body.

AMAZING BASS Peter... i'm definitely getting one ASAP, so i better start saving money hehe, since i live in Chile it's even more expensive, i'm going to New York in July but i don't think i can make it this year (i'd have to order mine now) but who knows... maybe i can get some AC on the classifieds...

Now that you mention it... The fingerboard finish would wear out quite quickly won't it. It's probably poly then.

The passive AC's sound like good old fashioned vintage Fenders; the LG's have a nice J bass bark with thick low end and a smooth top end. The passive LM's have the right amount of ash/maple sizzle. I asked Jimmy what the price point would be on the passive models and as of Sunday he still had not figured out what he was gonna do with those, price wise.

All A-C J's have an active/passive push pull that makes them identical to a passive bass when the preamp is bypassed. They sound GLORIOUS in passive mode. The start of my LM and LG clip records each bass passively, then clicks in the preamp 'flat'... all you can hear is that classic 'buffering' impact (widening the low end a touch, and extending the top end a touch... like those 'redeemer' things). The pre is very transparent... maybe the most transparent out there... very little difference between passive and 'active flat' versus most other basses I've played.

The difference between passive and clicking in the active totally flat is almost negligible - very transparent as K said. In my little experience so far, Jimmy's preamp is also one of the most organic sounding that I have had the luxury of playing.
