Club Alleva Coppolo (Part 11!)

I believe to make the 'body to neck proportion' on the 5 strings similar to the 4 strings. Doesn't really bother me either way. I believe he made the body a bit thinner to offset for the slightly wider body at the 'tummy tuck' area.
I believe the NAMM LM's were still prototypes, so not sure if the 'final spec' will look like the trans wine pictured above.

I've had a lot of playing time on AC 5's with both wider and normal bodies (the bass Ken referred to above and the black RA5 now owned by Jonno), and I have to say I prefer the wider style - it just looks more proportionate. The wider one doesn't feel much different to play, so to me it's just an aesthetic thing. Not a deal breaker either way, though.

Just got back from a jam session... Haven't been too active in the gig circuit lately so the RA5 is slowly getting broken in. I seriously could not be more happy with this bass. It just delivers the goods.

Not to spark yet another debate but I keep thinking of something I've read quite a bit from different people here on TB about Sadowsky's and how they may not impress when played solo but wait til you try it in a band situation... I've done the solo part but not the band part so I'm halfway there... I am really pleased to say that in my experience so far these A-C's deliver on both counts... I love playing it solo at home and can't wait to get to rehearsals or gigs... I am so pumped right now I can barely contain my emotions!

I KNOW you guys know what I mean.

Nah... most of us totally dig it (and there is a reason for the size.. that bit of extra mass that IMO provides some of the 'A-C magic... a flat sawn, classic 34" scale neck with noticable fewer dead spots than most 'classic instruments'). It's kind of like the logic of having an 'integrated fat finger' already built into the headstock. Pretty cool, and compared to other 'classic basses' I've played, the A-C's (at least the 6 or 7 I've played) have been virtually dead spot free

It's like anything else... if you don't dig the look of the bass, there are other choices. Jimmy can't make these instruments fast enough. It's like that strange way the FBass BN models hang on the strap. Many just hate that (including me), but it is an integral part of the feel and design of the bass that many love also. That's why there are so many choices. If a design component of a given bass really doesn't float your boat, there are plenty of other brands that will get you close to the same tone (the FBass V models, the Nordy 'classic' models, the Lull 'Classic models, etc., etc.).

What the heck... one more slightly different take on the LG tone. This is my LG through a very tight, somewhat aggressive, grindy/growl small rig (the Schroeder 115L+/Markbass F1). I really dig that rig with the LG.. warm, tight, but with a bit of snarl and growl to me ears. This rig sounded great with the RA also... it's a bit much with the LM!

Just FYI. I did this primarily to highlight the amazing little 115L+, but it is a pretty good example of the LG tone also IMO.

So im bout 7 pages late but here is my AC Entry!
I had two but i sold the LM5. It was GORGEOUS but it always lost in the shootout when I compared them in the studio. Maybe im a converted 70's to 60's guy now. I ALWAYS chose my LG5. I found a great home for it tho and after hearing Yohann...I think i might be an ASH/RW guy myself. I like my 77 Jazz's tone a bit more. But the feel and playability of the LM5 is UNDENIABLE! Im sure another AC will come up! I have been trying to get the twin of my LG5 in a Pbass. I played her and she was AMAZING! But I dont think Maro would ever sell it!

I have an LG on order in Surf green right now. Great color.
But... every time I see this bass I change my mind again and go Oly White (poor Jimmy must be shakin his head every time he gets another 'final answer' email from me).

I did the same thing I think at some point he just ships the body to the painter to stop the madness.

Solo is one thing... that top end totally disappears in the mixes I play in though (as a number of us discussed in the last thread). I agree it sounds good, but there is a reason many (most) 'slap style' players prefer ash/maple (or ash/ebony for the 'modern' guys). As you know, playing alone in the living room is a VERY different thing from gigging in a mix. That is again why I own an LG and an LM... both great tools for different jobs!

All this stuff sounds good though, just depends on the tone you want. Neither of these basses are ever going to be made to sound the same IMO. I love them both!

To me, both slap sounds are totally valid...just depends on what you're after. Does the LM cut more...yes. Is the LG a little more complex with more envelope at the expense of slice...I think so. Does the LG get lost...not to me...just more laid back presence with that woolie MOJO thing/delivery (I'm thinking of MikeXBass's clip here, although granted, it is in solo context). Each compliment the other, not invalidate the other IMO.

And again to clarify Vision's and my comments, NO ONE is saying the more 60's slap tone gets lost in general (Larry Graham did OK with it!).... only that the TOP END that comes through so nicely on the solo clips tends to get lost in a mix into the cymbals, etc. This is, IMO, due to a bit of space in an alder/RS instrument between the mids and treble (i.e., no upper mid gank) that results in the top end sounding very pure and pretty to most people in a solo setting or a sparse mix, but kind of being eaten up in more dense mixes.

This is why (IMO and lots of IME!) most who like a very present top end in their tone gravitate toward an instrument like an LM, and those who like it a little more warm and old school tend to gravitate toward an alder/RW instrument like the LG. This has been the case for around 40 years now or so

Hey Ken..reviewed your sound clips...man those are helpful.
I have to say, though, that the LG thru that RS210 is so strikingly organic sounding compared to those other flavors of excellence.

+1 Those ceramic drivers and that smooth, mellow coax tweeter, combined with the very warm RH450 just seems kind of 'meant' for an alder/RW type instrument... wonderful mix and match IMO!

It's been a long week, brought my wife to the emergency room on Wednseday night...long story short...her appendix ruptured, just came home an hour ago....

Cranked up her Dream Girl's CD on the way home "We Are Family" she couldn't be more happy to be coming home to our 6 month old son....Made me think of Jason and the AC club..

BACK ON TOPIC....I can't wait to get the LM5, then I won't have to worry about much with my Mono dual case coming to all my gigs......I'll always have the LG & LM at my gigs! BTW the Sadowsky Metro UV70 ain't so bad either especially for the $..

And, we are morphing into the same person gear-wise Those Mono double cases are wonderful. I will be bringing my LM and LG to most gigs now also. Making all these clips has made me really start digging the LG tone more than ever.
