Cool! I look forward to trying those! His LG is almost identically spec'd to mine, so I think he's pretty happy when I talked with him last week! The RA isn't my thing personally, but they are a cool, rather unusual spec, and have their own unique vibe.

Hey, I'm going to be putting together a hang, maybe between Christmas and New Years, and hopefully we can get the gang together (Kerry, Gino, Harrington, Mike (Mikebass), Pope, etc.). I'm going to start working on it! I actually have my LM in Detroit through the end of the year, so we will have plenty to check out. I haven't heard Will's new Sadowsky yet either.

What is it about them that makes them special, and stand out from the crowd of fender copies (not meant in a negative way at all!)?

How heavy would one expect a 5 string to be?

Weight is a major issue for me when having basses made and my current main bass is at 4.1kg which is enough I recon :-)

For me, it is that both of mine pretty much sound and feel like VERY old instruments from the era that inspired them (around 1966 and 1977 with my two, from what I've been told by the vintage guys on the site). So, in a way, for me, it is like having a classic, vintage instrument that happens to have 5 strings and a preamp. The whole vibe of these is quite different from anything else I've played in the boutique Jazz area... these basses just feel a bit 'old' to me, which I think is cool.

If I was into playing 4 string passive instruments, quite frankly, I'd probably just play a Fender J and be quite happy. But these things kind of give you that vibe (they of course are not 'copies', and have their own unique tone and feel like any instrument, but the 'vintage inspiration' is stronger in these than most others in the category).

The preamp is sublime... very transparent and smooth, and the 'passive vintage' nature of these basses comes through pretty strongly, even with 5 strings and the preamp engaged.

IMO there. I continue to love my LG5 and LM5 after quite a few years now. Necks are very stable, only minor dead spots, very even up and down the neck, nice B string, FAT G string, etc. etc.

Finally, if you don't go crazy with blocks and binding and nitro and 100 year old boards, the standard base models sound great and are reasonably priced compared to the competition in the category.

IMO and lots of IME!

Edit: One qualification. The A-C's that I own, and every one that I've played have come from the original NYC shop, and all are at least a few years old. I can't comment at all on the current models or production quality or designs, weight, etc. I have not played one of the current models made in the California shop by the 'new team'.

I really dont know what frets are on the new basses... They are narrow.. You could ask Jimmy.
I had mandolin wire on my P 5 though.. That was just re fretted this past summer by Jimmy..

LG4 sunburst not shown 9.7
They are all pretty light.. And resonant.. When played acoustically without amp it is loud!
