What kind of strings have you guys found that work well with the LG and LM's. Looking for something bright but is easy on frets and fingers? I just put some DR Fat Beams on and those things killed my fingers. D'addario pro steels is what I used b4 that worked ok with hands but were hard on frets. Give me your opinions!

Wow, the DR Fat Beams and Hi Beams, with the round core design, are about as easy on the fingers as any roundwounds I've ever played.

Not sure what to tell you other than the woodshed more and get your fingertips tough!

I have Hi Beams on my LM... smooth like nickel wounds, but with a very sweet upper treble, and a natural scoop in the upper mids, which is what many want on a 70's style instrument.

When I had my LG, I used DR Lo Rider Nickels... nice and growly and again, smooth.

I wouldn't worry about fretwear. If that really concerns you (i.e., having to replace frets after a decade of hard playing), stick with nickel wounds. You might dig the DR Lo Rider nickels, even on your LM.

So you're an SS guy. If you want slinky, get the DR HiBeams. Otherwise for more typical tension type stuff, maybe some nice Dunlops or LoRiders (my personal faves on a 34" scale). I also like Jimmy's strings a LOT.

I have Jimmy's SS strings on my LG. They've been on there a long time and still sound great.
I tried DA XL170 nickels for a second, and immediately went back to the SS.

TO Follow up. This article explains Alot about the RW issue.. Indian RW is included in the RAID at Gibson.. According to the LACY ACT the Indian RW has to be finished to a certain degree in India by Indians.. If not, it is a violation if i read it correctly... It is not a violation of US laws.. But this is the global economy... Interesting read ... So its not just Brazilian etc from what i gather but the way this particular batch of Indian RW was not prepared properly or worked to a finish by people in India.. Weird over stretching Laws if you ask me....
Where is Bowlus. He would understand it better.. May be a good Article for BG Mag.

I posted a link.. It appears this issue was with Indian RW that was not finished in India.. It appears yo cannot but FB blanks without it being made to finish by people in india.. The plot gets deeper.. This can affect everyone... and im not in the mood to play a graphite bass... did that in the late 70s and not doing it again
But read past the headline.... there are little nuggets of info in there.

Gigged with the red sparkle KBP4 last night through an Aguilar AG500 & 2x DB112 rig.

Not sure how it sounded out front but up on stage the sound was great, round fat tone, cleanly defined right across the board.

Maybe say Ebony.. I know a guy, that knows a guy Link RemovedLink RemovedLink Removed.....that has the Dalbergia stuff .. These are black like ebony with some red tint...

But can you imagine Indian RW being brought into this too.. Indian RW is on almost every production instrument made in the past few decades from what i understand !! Fender uses it all the time on almost all their basses. God my head hurts...

My sadowsky pj5 has Madagascar RW.. I am going to get a Madagascar or "Jimmy Wood" FingerBoard neck from Alleva to put on my bass when i travel... What a PITA !

Quick question:

Any reason why Alleva uses P & J pickups but not humbucker? I know theres some allure to boutique vintage instruments but why stop at improving just Jazz & P basses? Why not a Stingray? a G&L?

Would you guys buy em? Is it that they can improve on Fender more than they can improve on G&L & Stingrays?

The simple answer is that is what Jimmy wants to do. He has a niche and does it well.

My personal opinion is you can buy a nice stingray from Ernie ball. For me G&L is unappealing.
