Yeah.. You know as well as I do how almost impossible it would be to RE-WRITE that law in this day and age.. Thats a pipe dream..
I cannot go political here for obvious reasons.. In general, I guess i can say there are so many more things that are more on the front burner in everyday news that will get attention.. I don't think anyone will get time to look at this one... No one cares except us..
And a few patriot types.. Thats it..

So in reality, no one is going to re write this legislation anytime soon..

Here is the latest news blip from fellow Austin-ite Alex Jones with Gibson CEO.

I'm Trying to keep everyone updated on this. And Alex seems to have almost daily Video reports from Gibson's CEO top dog, the man with his head on the Block.. Im almost waiting for a Federal judge to put a GAG order on this.. We will see.

As far as traveling with your basses internationally.. I just got back from Poland, Switzerland, France and Germany with no issues with my (jimmy wood :D ) Alleva LG5.. In fact in Germany, i was just waved through.. No scanner, no metal detector.. They said just go ahead, and they sent me though to board a 777 back to the USA.. I think it was in Frankfort. I don't remember..
My bass was checked in a road case.. I usually gig bag it..

Again at this time the CEO states that it is for the working of the wood, and NOT for the Species or genus ... The 4007 and 4008 specifies in the code that its mm thickness of the blanks...

It only needs to be re-written to properly protect endangered natural resources, and state things in sensible enforceable ways.

There have been confiscation of instruments.. In the 80s - 90s i was on tour with a pop star. And we were traveling internationally.. An opener band had an acoustic guitar and a pair of Leopard skin boots confiscated in the UK customs.. Im sure if i know of one there must also be others.

FWIW:
I've not heard of *any* individual musician's axe being confiscated, or even hassled.
I'm not the most connected guy in the world, but I'm not the least, either.

So for the time, that question seems to be very hypothetical.

DFW and NT area Alleva Coppolo Owners. Anyone wishing to meet up and hang, I will be doing a gig with Point Blank on October 2 at Cowboys in Arlington,TX for the SRV Remembrance Ride and Concert .. Should be fun..!
Not sure if the kbp5 or the LG5 is going out on this leg or not.. It will be one or the other. The GB rig out now and doing fine.. may be the P5.. looks like the LG is going in for repair.. Some idiot (besides me) dropped it and cracked the body and jimmy may have time to fix the poor thing at that time...

It will be fun...

That's not a brand new law.. Its just seems to be selectively enforced now..
However, there have been similar laws in the past that cover similar issues.. Every instrument that i have toured with in the past on major tours would have to be listed on a shipping touring doc. Country of origin, price, etc etc.. i think it is called a Carnae' ( Spelling).. If there were discrepancy the piece could be confiscated..
In fact, in 89-90 we were on the USA leg of a tour i think we were in Detroit.. We had a week off so the gear travels in the Semi trucks in cases to the next venue.. The artist i was with was doing a single release for a TV show. And it was going to be recorded in Canada.. I think Toronto or Quebec.. cant remember. So we were to fly to do the session then lay over in Canada a few days till the show.. Think it was @ Kingswood..
My tour manager Paul ,STRONGLY suggested that i not fly the bass for fear of border confiscation. I had a few pedullas and spectors out with me and my old fender.. The bass i was going to bring was my Pedulla5.
So with his advice i let the Pedulla stay with the gear trucks and go ground. They ( tour company ) rented me the only bass in town for rent that day...It was a Fender P in Toronto ?? to use on the session..
Session went great after i tweaked the bass , put new strings on it etc.... It was for the TV show the Wonder Years.. all was well. So even back in 90, there were confiscations going on.. Would they swipe a Pedulla? Who knows..
But Paul the Tour manager knows his stuff and has worked with Every Major act in the world.. I was not going to go against his word..
Just another old war story..:rollno::D

I'm not sure how an instrument confiscated 30 years ago fits with current enforcement tendencies...

Still had items that were confiscated.. You must not have read the entire post and Alans post to get the whole vision.. .

IIRC you incorrectly said it was the WOOD species. a few times..Then when i showed you the CEO Henry saying it was not the Species but instead it was the wood working method..You said that you dont believe it.. Even after the guy (Gibson's CEO)is telling you in the video link what is going on..

Why do you feel the need to disagree and micromanage every minutia of my comments.. Are you OK or are you flipping out or something? Whats your agenda?

But the part that deals with plants... wood... IS. That amendment was just passed in December of 2008, so your 30 year old case has nothing to do with the Lacy act. Totally unrelated.

Cool. Kirk, what do you mean by "beveled" body?

I also had to look it up ;-)":

Beveled edge refers to an edge of a structure that is not perpendicular to the faces of the piece. The words bevel and chamfer overlap in usage; in general usage they are often interchanged

I dont know if it is some kind of 'extra countoured' body?

My LEJ is beveled on the bottom horn. It's cut out some on backside so you can play the high register notes better. Same original body shape, but allows you to play notes on 20th and up frets better. No hand cramping.

You're still getting confused, and this is also in various places. Yes, it gets into labor laws, but it's as applicable to wood products, which falls under the December 2008 amendment regarding plants. I don't know how to make it any clearer than that. And no, I never said species.

ok... been working with Jimmy on setting up more access to info for his stuff... we are going to be doing a lot! To start we set up a tumblr ( soon to connect with twitter, fb, ect,,,) and soon complete revamp of the site. Our idea with the tumblr is that you can see stuff from the past, present, and future... and we are welcoming you sending pics in of you playing A-C's or just a pic of your bass and we will try and post it! the site is not 100% up, but its getting there! the link is Alleva-Coppolo and you can send pics to : [email protected]... I have no idea if this will be cool or not, but its worth a try.. go check it.. you may see your bass there already..

ps you can send links ( youtube/vimeo, whatever) and we will add those too...
