At the risk of my own peril, I might take another sampling...
My LG still has the guard off, and I'm tempted to leave it that way permanently, but I'm still curious what others think, and I do really (also) like the guarded look. Seemed to be pretty much split down the middle last time. Here it is with it off (again) and with it laid on for a visual "what if"...

My LM5 is on it's way to Florida. I will get it when I arrive next week, I'm doing a semester at the Player's School.
That is a sick, stupid, rediculous paint job. Very nice.
I have an audition next week and spent some time yesterday deciding which bass to take along.
I've been playing mostly classic soul/funk/disco for a few years in bands with horns and multiple singers but fancied something a bit different and applied to a 4 piece rock band with twin guitars.
The songs they've given me to learn are all fairly simple but I think the band are looking for feel and tone more than technical dexterity
I laid out a few choices (I have far too many basses!) and my decided to try all my usual favourites:
New Ritter Cora, solid maple body, ebony board
'86 Fodera Monarch PJ
'83 Fodera Monarch JJ
Custom build '60 Jazz Herbie Flowers rep with flats
AC RA4 - ex Mitch Starkman
Would have tried my '63J as well but it's currently out on loan to a good friend.
The Cora is a great bass for whizzing around the board but that all maple body can be quite bright and wasn't suiting the songs very well.
The '86 has been my 'go to' bass for a while and provided my reference tone/feel for the day. The PJ configuration works really well, especially the flick switch that allows me to instantly solo the P.
The '83 has more snap and sizzle but didn't quite feel like it had the 'oomph' to carry one of the slower songs without some amp tweaking and I'd like to leave everything fairly static on the night.
The '60 rep was my wild card and the flats worked quite well but one song needs a bit more aggression than it delivers easily.
So - and I'm sure you've seen this coming - that left me with the RA which totally nailed it
A smidgeon of boost to both bass and treble, passive tone rolled off a little, both pickups on full. It delivered all the smooth & classy low end punch the slower songs needed but responded to my digging in a bit more on the faster, rockier, songs with just the right amount of growl and snap.
Seriously impressed, just felt so responsive to changes in playing style. Will definitely use this for the audition and see how it works in the band format

I was at Jimmy's yesterday and there are some awesome looking basses in production!
A whole bunch of LM's were being cut and sanded and that ash really looks good! Everyone going for an LM I say go clear or transparent its got some really sweet grain!
Heard from him as well he is not taking any new orders to clear the backlog so thats cool for everyone waiting for their basses.
Last but not least I got to say this...I had Jimmy lower the action on my bass and he killed it! He set it up lower then his standard setting and I really like it. As a comparison its lower then the standard Sadowsky set up but slightly higher then the Nordstrand set up.
All great now and can't put my baby down!

Sorry man...totally forgot...it was too good a time....but there were at least 6 basses that were painted and tonnes of bodies all over the shop being lined up to be sanded and others to be cut.
Work is going on non stop. Those Ash bodies......Hhhmmmm...makes me want to get an LM but I swore the next one would be a KPB!
