I'm a recent AC convert. I bought a second hand Jazz standard 4 string about a month ago. It's an older model (B0011) with suhr hum cancelling pickups. You guys already know how good AC basses are. Let me give you my perspective -

I'm just finalising an order with Jimmy for a new KBP4 -

Alder Body
Indian Rosewood board
1.5 Jazz width at nut
Piano black body
Matching headstock
Tort guard

This isn't a kneejerk or impulsive purchase. I've been playing for 17 years and am a horribly indecisive guy when it comes to my basses. I own 5 right now. Two are up for sale. Another two very nice and expensive basses are also likely to be spending more time at home or sold. My AC jazz is that good.

Heres a new cure for GAS - buy a world class jazz and a world class precision and get used to having perfect tone all the time :D

Well LM does not stand for Larry but he always was real nice to me. He hooked me up with an incredible '58 tweed deluxe that I wish I still had. Damn it Kirk, now you've done it and brought up another "one that got away " :crying:pieces that I had to let go. Crap... Oh well, I got other stuff.

I spent last evening playing -- and caressing -- my new LG-5 (Aged Oly White nitro, Indian rosewood and alder). It's simply beautiful. I love the feel of the nitro on the neck...the finish is so creamy rich I'm going to have a little trouble watching it age: I want it to stay like this forever, and I know it won't. Can't wait to gig it.

Questions on tone settings for you LG-5 folks (and I'd be interested in hearing from any A-C players on this, regardless of your model). I know so much is in the hands, but I'm wondering how you set your knobs. Right now, I'm tending toward two sets of settings: 1) both pickups and passive tone control all the way up, preamp engaged but both boost knobs all the way down; or 2) pickups all the way up, a little pre boost both top and bottom, a little passive tone control rolled off. So what do *you* do? This is my first J-style bass, and I'm really looking for that juicy J growl (or grind or whatever you'd call it) and that "pfft" thing on the attack that nothing does like a J.

More feedback coming as I continue to play it, especially including this weekend in da club.

Oh I know.. I couldn't give the real LM explanation though... I figured I would set out a detour, bread crumb, dis-information trail..

I was able to play my LG5 out for the first time last night. I know, it took two weeks!

I absolutely love this bass and everything about it. The finish, the neck, the playabilty, the tone everything. It just works on every level. It makes playing easy.

I found myself favoring passive last night. Both pickups up with the tone at 60% or so. The passive tone is so great on this bass that I don't find myself using the preamp unless I need some bass boost. I don't ever boost treble.

Jimmy, you have one very happy customer right here!

Lately, I've been doing a really loud blues gig, so I've been running both pickups full out, the passive tone all the way open then just back a hair, and both the bass & treble knobs at about 50% plus or minus a little. For gigs where i need some finesse, i back off a bit on the neck pickup and on the bass knob for more of that juicy j bass growl that you're talking about.

On my LG I'm passive alot with the tone control rolled off at least 1/3 most of the time whether I'm on both pups or the back one.

When active, I only boost the bass about 20% just to fatten up the natural sound of the bass slightly..sometimes the treble is boosted but only slightly for a little sizzle depending on the context.

When I try the steel bridge soon it may change....

I'm pretty sure that I've figured out what KBP stands for....or was that cat already out of the bag. I haven't been following the whole conversation.

As to the tone controls, when I had an LM5, I prefered to use the boosts sparingly. Most often, I set everything flat and shaped a tiny bit from there. The bass delivered on pretty much any (non-extreme) setting.
