Very nice, it makes me want to complete the trio and add an LM to my LG/KBP duo.

The timings not quite right for me at the moment but I'm not sure I will be able to live without an LM over the long-term.

I still play my other stuff, but I can definitely see this happening with a lot of folks. Jimmy's definitely got some magic dust he sprinkles on these things at the shop. I'm almost afraid to play an LM that might be a more typical one (assuming the green one I had was different than most, and why it didn't really draw me in).

I haven't built an ash rosewood combo KBP4 or 5. The '59's were actually alder by the way. Alder became standard in '57; which still had maple necks then (you're right) in '59, rosewood boards the standard... very few late '58's have the rosewood- but don't tell any body :)... Any way, maybe I should build one just for giggles ;).

TRUST me! It was VERY different from mine and other LM5s I have played. If you're normally used to more aggressive tones another LM5 may steal your heart...and your wallet. :)

I played mine at a gig last Saturday (the day I got it) and rehearsal tonight and WOW!

I have to admit, at first I was a little skeptical about the whole vintage thing because I didn't think the vintage sound had the kind of "bite" I wanted but when I heard my bass in the mix I realized that was the sound that I had in my head all along. I grew up listening to old school 70s and 80s funk tunes so I naturally gravitated to the sound of my LM5. It really cops that 70s tone to a tee.

I was also worried that it wouldn't work with the smooth jazz/R&B band that I play with regularly because I was thinking that a more modern sounding bass like a Sadowsky or MTD 535 would work better but...WOW...all I have to say is WOW! The whole band LOVES the sound of this bass and it has greatly EXCEEDED my expectations. The bass just commands me to slap on it all day long and the fingerstyle tone? GROWLY and clear low end for days.

It just trips me out how even the WHOLE bass is. All the way from the Bb string (I tune my whole bass a half step down) to the Gb string everything is balanced perfectly. I can actually hear my higher register notes clearly and although I'm used to basses with a 3-band eq, this LM5 does NOT need a mid control. It has plenty of the good mids already there.

I'll be using it at a jazz festival tomorrow night and for the rest of my life. :)

Very cool! Yeah, when you get all those growly mids in a mix, it's really something. The LM's are the best '5 string funk machines' I've experienced, and there is just something about that aggressive 70's type tone that just works better than anything else I've tried in a pop/jazz/funk type context (IMO again!) Enjoy! :bassist:

Also, per a couple of the posters' comments above, there is something very cool about being able to cover the three 'classic' general bass tones all in one family of basses, and in 5 string version if you want it: the classic, more aggressive 70's J tone, the more mellow, fat, warm 60's type J tone, and the classic P Bass. While that 70's tone has always spoken to me, and obviously works the best for the funk/pop/jazz type contexts I perform in, I am probably going to add one of Jimmy's 5 string PBasses to keep the LG company. That trio would cover any possible tone situation or context that I would personally ever be put in!

An ash/maple KB5 is looking pretty sweet to me with nickel roundwounds on it!

This is NOT good news for me... :)

That said, if I did end up with an LM someday, I'll also say I wouldn't see that diminishing my LG... damn I love that bass...

He was the first bassist I studied along with Mark Adams from Slave, another bassist that played a 70s jazz. Same type of bass but both bassists had VERY different sounds from each other.

Yep, my LM5 is a true late 70s funk machine. It can cop Marcus' and Mark's tone in spades.

Yeah, you know I was JK on that of course, but I did think it was kinda' interesting your initial thought was that sound wouldn't work in that band... man, I'd have thunk it'd be the hit it was from the beginning. :)

I tried the LG5 before, too. XavidmanX brought his former one to one of my soundchecks. Those are great basses, too but the slap tone was a little different to my ears. I've always loved rosewood boards but I never played a LG5 that spoke to me like an LM. That probably has a lot to do with the fact that my ear is used to hearing the 70s tone.

Man, if Jimmy can get a 12 pound ash body, I'm probably going to move on one soon......Roni & Vic, what do you think it was that was so different about the other LM.......?.....Weight......?

Well, I don't have a reference of another LM to compare it to, but it just didn't seem to have the tonal life and depth the CAOJ LG and mine both do. Didn't seem to have as much sizzle and growl. I hope this doesn't sound too horrible of me, but it had kind of a clank to the high end I didn't really dig much (and yeah, I know, there's some of that inherent to the 70's tone compared to the 60's tone, but this was different than what I'd have expected). It basically just sounded like an LG that was "missing something" to me.

For me it was the neck profile. The weight was about the same as mine with mine possibly being a tad bit heavier.

The back of the neck on the LM5 that Vic tried was chunkier than the average AC neck to my hands. Also, I don't know if you noticed it but the string spacing on the bridge on that seemed around 18mm instead of the usual 19mm. I don't know. That one just felt vastly different from the other LM5s I tried including the one I own now! It felt odd and the body looked a little smaller, too.

I only played it at BP Live a couple of years ago in NYC so I can't tell you how it sounds in a mix. It sounded great amplified there but still different than mine. Vic can elaborate more on how it sounded in a mix. :)

Same here on the weight. Mine's right at 9, and that LM wasn't much more. Maybe 9.5. That wasn't really it.

Hmmm... I didn't recall the specifics of the neck diffs, but now that you mention it, I think you're right. I do recall it at least didn't feel as good to me somehow. That said, the thing that "laid there" for me the most was the sound.

BTW, this is all RELATIVE! Compared to a LOT of basses out there, it still kicked a$$... just not as much as the other AC's I've played... that's all. :D

The bridge spacing and the body shape/size at least seemed the same to me.
