Those new blog pics of 196 & 198 are intriguing, liking the shaping on the back of 196 and that Myrtle is going to be striking with a poly coat.

Looks like 195 & the Nemesis will be here on Thursday

And if all goes as well as it has been going so far, Tom said Thursday gig night will include #196 in the mix. How exciting is that? Then slap a couple of drizzles of finish, a little sanding here and final adjust there, throw it in a box, put it on the roadside so the pony express can pick it up, stuff it in a saddle bag and get to my house and throw it on the porch so as I can find it there when I gits home. Woooo, that's a lot of work to get done. I can hardly wait. help: something wrong with this man?)

Yup. Am already anticipating the sound of the strings and those Fat Stacks. I am wondering what strings I will settle with. #196 will have Dean Markley SR2000 tapered steels on when I receive it but will I end up with Infeld Jazz bass flatwounds or somewhere in between? Oh, the joys to come. #122 can hardly wait to see the new sibling. Battle of the grands. Dueling basses. Daddy play with me. No, He played with you last time; it's my turn now...

#177 has the full-funk sound that I totally love, but #164 is just so EASY to play!

Choice is a good thing though!

Well, updates are fun. We have decided to buy a set of TI flat wounds from Tom. He had them on hand. Body done:
Fretting being done right now.

This is a rather hasty photoshop sketch of what I'd Like to call the "MM" Phoenix.

I said a few days ago that it's hard to make the Phoenix look bad so i tried doing a Fenderish/Sadowskyism "Marcus Miller" interpretation of the Phoenix...

No I don't have the funds right now to set it in motion, Tom. I hear your gears turning from here. On the other hand, ther may be a few other TBer's that could be interested in this as a bass ( and have the cash to do it).

Specs:
Northern hard Ash with a few chambers in the body

5 piece laminated maple neck with a birdseye maple fretboard (binding optional)

Hipshot A brass bridge

Nordstrand nj5fs
split coil 5 string jazz-type bass pickups

Sadowsky preamp with VTC control....

Man that opens a can 'o worms!!

I definately don't dislike it, in fact I very nearly really like it. But the wood worshipper part of me says:

'NO TO PICKGUARDS WAVEY'
(You gotta imagine the big Boomy Bearded voice)

But then I recall (puckboy?) who has the black gloss finish Jon - my first thought was (that damn wood worshipper again)

'NO TO NITRO CELLULOSE (OR WHATEVER THEY CALL IT) AND OTHER SOLID GLOSS FINISHES DAVEY!!!'

But I did actually really dig the solid black finish, the more I looked at it.

Same goes with the pickguard.

And maybe even a combination of the two - Especially for those that like a more traditional cut to their Jib!!!

Some one likes pickguards and paint. Look at the success of the guitar companies that do that sort of thing and I am sure we have all had one or two of them each. But I am a "woody" bass person.

I know, I know....burled, flamed wood of most kinds is dead sexy, but even the best looking wood can look bad on funky looking bass body shape...

Which is my the Phoenix is so nice, it clearly can handle even a traditional look!

Thanks! It's really sloppy and nothing I'd hand over to client if they were commissioning a proper concept rendering...but for a quickie it gets the point across...

I'm not adverse to it at all, in fact my step son (15 years old) asks why all my basses are wood. Why not red or black or purple!!??

There obviously are a LOT of people out there that love the gloss solid finishes.

And you are right, the phoenix copes well with the extras!

Just had a thought, my Wood voice gives me all this greif on solid finishes.....

BUt He also wants me to get a chambered felicia 6 string fretless from Tom - with lots of HOLES in it!!! I mean I was positively drooling over nofretz new baby.

So whats worse, cutting holes in your baby -or wrapping it in plastic??
