The VF is my biggest surprise. I knew how the AC would sound and feel since I had the chance of trying one in a store. But the VF was more of a guess. Not a big one of course but still. And man oh man! This is by far the biggest-open-growl-tight tone I had ever played. The B string is awsome and puts my Musicman Stingray5 to shame. And of course the slap tone is also incredible.

And I installed a set of Ken Smith Rock Masters non-taper core strings, adjusted the intonation and...the difference was shocking. Now upper register chords play perfectly in tune! So my conclusion is that exposed core strings will not play in tune unless you minimize the length of the exposed core portion, which is a hassle but possible using spacers. It looks funny too.

It's a shame, because the F Bass strings really do sound and feel great. Perhaps George will consider a non-exposed core version in the future ;)

I am waiting for a set of Hard Rocking Steels from La Bella, which is non-exposed core and according to them similar in sound and feel to the F Bass strings. To be continued...

I just figured out why I've been able to work around the intonation problems with fresh Fbass strings on my BN6... it's because I have Thor! When I'm playing chords and playing up the neck, that stuff I do on another bass because I like the piezo tone for it.

I was noodling around on my BN6 last night doing stuff I normally play on my fretted AC6 and, well, decided I've got to try other strings on the BN6 if I'm going to be playing up there much in the future.

It's a Hipshot B style with string through option. The design between the pickups is a sterling silver double bass clef design made for me by a terrific jeweler and a good friend named Chester Allen. Check him out on FaceBook!

You will recognize the bass as an AC5, but if you don't recognize the bassist, it is Hadrien Feraud.

Hadrien has been named “Rising Star, Electric Bassist of the Year” by the Downbeat Critics Polls and “Most Exciting New Player” by Bass Player magazine.
