6 string VF PJ fretless. I'm not sure but I think that might be a first. If not a first very rare. I don't recall ever seeing another but as always if anyone has any pics of one.....

It's been a talkbass-wide rule for over a decade now that club membership comes with posting a photo. That said, I don't really care. :)

I will say that some people really want certain numbers for varying reasons. I got a special request recently and will have to check on that before I can give a number.

Hi all! I'm new. I bought a BN5 and I am very happy. It is an incredible bass. I'll likely replace all chrome hardware to black.
So, what do you say? Black hardware or chrome?

Congratulations on your new bass, and welcome to the club!

Do I get a number or do I need to wait for completion? (-:
I have a serial # already!
It's been a talkbass-wide rule for over a decade now that club membership comes with posting a photo. That said, I don't really care. :)

Yes it is. I’m most fascinated by the combination of options. VF, P/J, fretless! It’s going to be gorgeous in blue too.

There are things about F basses that we take for granted after a time. I played a couple my other basses this past service— Both had significant neck dive. I was playing my VF today and it just hangs perfectly as do the BN and BNF. The tones are off the chart too. There is just nothing quite like the art of George and company.

I'm glad you brought up how the Fs balance on the strap.

My first sixer was the Patitucci signature Yamaha. I *loved* that bass, and got another one — a lined fretless. They were my twins, and I loathed to play anything else.

Then I got my first 5er.

I loved how my BN5 looked and balanced, but it felt like it was missing a string so it never got gigged. Then one night the battery cut out on my JP Yamaha 6er, so I switched to my backup, the BN5. At the break, as I was replacing the battery in my Yamaha, the band came to me as a group and asked me to please play the FBass from now on instead. They said it sounded soooo much better.

I remember being embarrassed that I didn't notice that myself. I was so preoccupied with my Yamaha not working, and hoping it was just a battery that I wasn't listening.

They were right though.

Soon I ordered a BN6.

Although I played the Yamahas at home for practice, I never gigged them again.

One day I decided to bring a Yamaha, but when I began to play, I felt like I was fighting the neck and my fretting hand was wearing out more quickly.

Not long after that, I sold the twins.

They were great basses, but I was now spoiled to how basses should be designed, and I couldn't go back. :-)

So what are your thoughts on a fretted AC having had the experience of actually owning one?

The fretted AC was surprisingly different from my BN6.

The tones were completely different, which I was happy for. I really don't want to own a bunch of basses that sound the same; I like having choices.

The piezo with the neck pickup was especially intriguing to me. I could play chords that almost sounded like a thick acoustic guitar. I liked it a lot.

Around that time I changed my right hand technique from two fingers, to 4 fingers (thumb, index, middle, ring). My thinking was I can play faster with less effort, and skip strings on runs better, but there were two other reasons as well.

The first was tone. There is something about the tone you get with that style that is more articulate and expressive.

The second was consistency. Often my slap playing was plagued by ringing of other strings until I played awhile and got the bass calmed down again. I felt like if I were always muting with my left hand, be it slap or regular fingerstyle, then I wouldn't have to adjust so much; it would all be habit.

At any rate, because there wasn't enough space between the fingerboard and the neck pickup for three fingers in slap style, I only played my AC6 with regular finger plucking style. I just didn't want to try to remember to play my fretted AC6 with different fingers than I played my other basses.

Hi everyone, decided to take a little twist on one of my two VFpj's. I'm gonna switch from pj to jj, installing the aguilar AG4-60. I was debated, tried to sell the golden one, but then not a lot of interest was shown on my bass. Finally i decided to keep it and change the pickups configurations. Let's see how's gonna work out. Cheers everyone!

I'm having some serious inner turmoil about selling my Dusty Hill Fender for an Fbass VF. It's a dream bass and being Canadian it's like a bucket list rite of passage....but Dusty is badass.

Kinda apples and oranges. An early 50s p vs an fbass isn’t really a fair comparison. I also don’t think dusty is going to call you and demand a reason for trading or selling his Bass

Sorry, I didn't mean for that to read as a comparison..just an attachment to Dust but it might not get used all that much. I have a lead on a VF5 natural/maple that I'm exploring.

I hear you buddy, I didn't mean to sound so snarky.. I dunno, I think that the Fbass is a little more versatile. I love the look of the Dusty Hill bass but I also couldn't justify spending that much towards it.. just my bias!

I was just looking through some pics and came across a couple pics of what is now Bassjuju's BNF6. Thought he might get a kick out of them. I like the one of George listening for final adjustments before she left the shop

Thanks Dude! I too like the one where George is setting it up. I’m playing that one at service tomorrow... such tone!

It was one of the first things I checked. I still have the black one and think about changing it all the time. My local tech says to keep the bone nut. Could you tell a difference in the tone?
To be honest I couldn't tell that much of a difference after he switched them. I only heard the bone nut for a few minutes. I'm sure he used the bone nut for a reason and switched back to it right away for that same reason.

Today, I noticed something that I think gets overlooked too often.

2 Sundays ago, I played a Gretsch on one of the songs that I thought would benefit from the hollow body’s tone. It did and was a beautiful song. Neck dive is an issue with that bass and I knew this. The strap I used had a lambs wool pad and I had to keep a hand on the bass somewhere to keep the neck from dropping toward the floor a la Johnny Cash.

Fast forward to today and I’m playing this wonderful fretless F Bass pictured above because the bloom on one of the songs was the perfect tone. I noticed during one of the breaks that I let go to warm my hands and the bass stayed perfectly balanced and rock solid in playing position.

I’m betting that this was part of the original engineering and design considerations. I wonder how many attempts it took to get the balance just right?

Maybe it’s just a little thing, but it’s all the things like this that make me a fan and I suspect many others here as well.
