"A long time, if you really need a Moollon"
I actually wrote up the following last week, but sat on it for few days... I had a deep talk with YJ, and he conveyed his main concerns, much of which has been passed on more than once...and I believe I might have mentioned it previously here a few times.
YJ wanting to stick to a reasonable timeframe at time of order is no small concern, even though it's 100% reasonable and expected for a customer to ask about it and mark one's calendar accordingly. But since Moollon is one guy (not a normal shop or mini-factory with at least 2 people doing anything having to do with construction and assembly), once the disastrous hitch in progress happened last year, things became more opaque than ever, the earliest of orders of course being priority and is the list he's working with (currently January/February 2020, with some stragglers from before then).
When I mentioned to him that I'd best be all the more conservative with future estimates (something he's more than aware of) and if he's considered putting a pause on new orders until some semblance of catching up to the snowball can be handled, he was very much opposed to the idea of a pause, and would rather be simply frank with things.
And in the spirit of transparency, based on my conversation with YJ, the official position on the estimate for future orders is no longer 30+ months, but rather "a long time, if you really need a Moollon", and proceeding accordingly for those who have a long-term interest in purchasing a new Moollon. Folks will no doubt ask for a general time frame beyond that (he briefly hinted in passing at easily in excess of 3 years from here on out), but there will likely be none. It's just a matter of YJ staying healthy and chugging away as always get to each one done and out the door in sequence, the current streamlining of neck trim/aging hopefully helping speed things up.
From that point of view, it's very much in line with his original philosophy: Moollon is above all an affordable route to reproductions of the "old quirky stuff" for those that have the time to invest in an order for a classic workhorse in due time and/or want to keep vintage gear in the studio, and is not for affluent hoarders or those who want a Moollon like yesterday. In reference to the former...yes, we indeed have had customers asking if they could pay more to get YJ to "cut in line", and a definite "no" from the Boss himself usually results in them not writing back.
And although the overwhelming majority of Moollon customers in line have been beyond gracious with their time and patience and we're so grateful to have them wait it out with great long suffering the whole while, there is no small number of understandably upset individuals as well with "you told me..." complaints (coincidentally two were typed out in caps, just this past spring), which means all the more that we'd best move away from general optimism pertaining to a time frame on anything in the future and simply be the most pragmatic that we can... hopefully shooing tire kickers away from extraneously lengthy email conversations that go nowhere, in the process. Of course, YJ hopes that regular and consistent posting on FB will be at least help assure folks that he's moving forward as always, and I reckon that bit is up to me to keep them coming.
Lastly and in sum, as if it hasn't been a long time for all customers in line and patiently waiting up to now (it truly has), suffice to say when it comes to new orders from here on out, we've now officially entered the age of "a long time, if you really need a Moollon".
