Thanks so much for doing that clip. It can be hard to find decent quality Moollon clips on the internet. Would you say that the P5 has slightly hotter output? Also, any advice for explaining this to my girlfriend of 5 years, who so graciously "cosigned" my first Moollon?... If all the stars align I'll probably be looking to order one in the fall. Who really needs a new car anyway?

I’d explain it to her in relative terms.

Say you had a $500 a day drug addiction. In a yrs time you would have spent $182,500. In 5yrs, $912,500. Almost 1 million dollars.
At $2700 or so for a Moollon it’s a huge bargain. She’s the luckiest girl in the world!!

Yup, time to email Andi again about P5 availability... that pickup sounds great to me. Big, full range, dynamic.

That's been my experience, though I don't have a Moollon 4 to compare with my 5. Anyone worrying about the "P-ness" of that pickup needn't, at least to my ears.

Was just a quick and dirty I did for Kenny so he could hear what a Moollon P5 sounds like compared to a Moollon P IV Classic.

Recording path

Bass -> D'Addario American Stage cable -> Rupert Neve Designs RNDI Direct Box -> RME Fireface 800 -> Logic X with basic drum track

Basses

Moollon P IV Classic, Ernie Ball Cobalt Flats (about 18 months old), tone rolled off about 1/4

Moollon P V Classic, DR Pure Blues (also 12-16 months old, tone rolled off about 1/4

When I recorded the part I made sure not to play anything on the B string on the fiver below the E so as to not given away which was which. I did, however play part of the line on the B string above the E. I played the clip for 2 people including Kenny and a friend who also has a few Moollons. Neither could tell which was the 4 and which was the 5. Most of the difference you can hear, which is pretty minimal, is from the strings. TBH, I was surprised myself how similar they sounded.

Does the B524 have the neck pickup in the same position as the P5?

I would say no, the P5 is a 20fret whereas the B524 is 24, I do get passable P tones but also the circuit is totally different modelled after gibson 50s wiring. If you have heard some of the clips on tb (search b524) you can see that this bass is big sounding in the mix, doesn't get buried like a jazz. It just sounds like authority. It is probably very close though if you subtract off the 4 extra frets.

What I wrote was totally stupid, I should have just measured, and did - 11" from 12th fret to center of pole pieces. I think that is standard p placement to the split.

Man, I just can't do the wide string spacing on those....otherwise it'd be a perfect "one bass that does it all".

Hey Folks,

I'm about to initiate the process of getting a Moollon... very excited! The only detail I'm not sure about is the color. Going for a J4 Classic in either Olympic White, Fiesta Red, or Surf Green. I'm having a hard time finding any (good) pictures of a Moollon bass in surf green online for comparison... Anyone have any?
