Here are some images of the aforementioned Longhorn B524 bodies recently completed in LPB and Metallic Green (or Light OTM, if you will). As with the Root Beer Sparkle Longhorn B524 from a few years back, this is the shape of all future B524s.

The Longhorn B524 version was originally designed alongside the rounder B524, the longer upper horn specifically serving to prevent headstock dive. That said, we still have loads of the rounder bodies in a wide range of colors.

Hey Guys,
I finally got a Moollon classic J and yes, it is amazing. I feels and sound better that I had expected!!!
I know the hardware is made in-house with a special metal blend... so are the tuners quite heavy? I do notice a fair amount of neck dive which is not really common with fender jazz style instruments... is it just me?

In a day of so many fantastic early-production Fender style builders with many streamlined options like those little Hipshot machine heads, all Moollon basses will most likely feel a bit heavy on the neck side. Same goes when comparing alongside most modern Fenders as well.

As such, it's to be expected to a certain extent on your J-Classic IV, and both of my J-IVs also sit mildly neck-biased. We feel that super light Fender-style basses are a bit of a modern phenomenon and somewhat automatically expected by customers as a matter of course on contemporary builds, but they're simply not easy to come up with here in the shop with vintage-spec components, all while maintaining a good on-the-shoulder balance.

Although there are admittedly differences between all vintage pieces, Moollon boss YJ has a 1962 and 1964 Jazz Bass (both a little over 4.0kg), which in similar fashion will both dip slightly if let be while on the shoulder with a nylon shoulder strap... It's frankly no wonder why the old J-basses had that strap pin on the back of the headstock, straight out of the factory ;)

Congrats on the J-Classic! Please post a pic!

Regarding neck dive, I've noticed a hair of neck dive while not actually playing/standing up with the bass. When my right hand is in playing position it's a non-issue and I don't feel a lot of pressure on my right wrist from the headstock weight.

I think the tuners are heavy. But YJ is methodical, and as stated earlier on here, Moollon's are really the sum of their parts. I can't think of any luthiers who are doing their own proprietary hardware and not just using Hipshot stuff.

Indeed...and when ones narrow shoulders vs. wide shoulders issue also comes into play, I reckon we have no proper way of judging beforehand how it will actually feel when the buyer slips it on, and can only recommend a massive suede or neoprene shoulder strap to help increase friction.

On a related note, we have received many requests over the years from customers for "8.0lbs or less" builds, and often have to explain that it's pretty much impossible on an alder Moollon J-Classic IV. Due to the aforementioned vintage-spec hardware on both ends (tuners, bridge, saddles... and believe it or not, even all screws used are custom-spec reproductions), the overall weight can be matched to be "on the lighter side" if the most featherweight 2-piece alder blanks can be sourced, but it comes at the price of not-optimal shoulder balance....and total weight will certainly come out to well over 8.0lbs.

And if I may murk up the waters even more: the lightest J-Classic IV ever made (Stu Brook's lovely 2TS swamp ash J-IV) came out to just 3.65 kg/8.05 lbs, but as you can see, he's taken measures to keep it well in place :)

Hello Moollon people!

Some questions! Is the email address on the Moollon website the one where questions and orders should be sent?

I sent an email asking these things there but haven't yet gotten an answer ao I thought I might ask here.

Is it possible to order a bass with a matching headstock? And is a maple fretboard an option?

I'm thinking of a classic 3TSB + maple and gold guard, late 50's p-bass.
Or then solid color with a matching headstock, haven't decided yet! Maybe a sparkle...

YJ will do matching headstocks as well as maple necks (+$100 surcharge each), but as distant departures from anything resembling a classic look he really doesn't like the two together and regretfully won't do them. He admittedly did do a Blonde 1956 last year that did have that color combo, but it was a special request that he was only willing to compromise just that once ;)

A 3TS P-Classic IV with maple neck and gold anodized guard can very much accommodated.

Sonic Blue and Daphne Blue are easily the most confusing when (1) lighting conditions aren't clear, and (2) both colors aren't in the same picture ;) That said, with the bright backlit effect going on in the above image so both the maple headstock and tort guard look especially dark in contrast, I'm seeing Sonic Blue.

To illustrate my point maybe better (or worse) this J-IV is rather similar to the above in appearance, due to different lighting conditions: Under cloudy skies with reflective lighting support, here's Zuri Appleby and her Daphne Blue J-IV
