Will Mr YJ and Andi be at NAMM 2019?

We're unfortunately far too much in the red to afford a booth at NAMM any time soon, but there's a good chance YJ will likely be in attendance and roaming the floor thanks to our dear friends at Muztek. Will see if I can sneak a bit more info in due time, I'm sure he'd love to chat a bit with the extended Moollon family present at the show.

No, it's much more than that.

Every year is different and there are numerous circumstances (including the very distinct four seasons we have here in Korea, and his own health) that affects the number of pieces that YJ can do throughout a year. That said: As of late, the total number of builds that YJ can do per year has been running around 7 dozen or so, and of the last 5 -6 years or so I'd say that at least 70% of those were bass builds. So, roughly speaking that's more like up to around 60 basses per year I'd say.

In the early 2010s he was doing up to a hundred pieces per year, about half of which were for local customers.

That's correct.

When cited by in few very keen customer inquiries about the reason for deviating from straight grain (when YJ has otherwise obsessed over the details to reproduce the pre-CBS formula), he'd mention that quartersawn often is slightly easier to "correct on its own" when adjusting necks, especially those that are a bit more bowed in either direction. That is to say, straight grain is a fine cut for neck, but when adjusting quartersawn necks as one does throughout the year, they tended to be less prone to warp/twist when under full string tension while straightening out.

And when I asked him what was on the other end of the spectrum, he didn't hesitate. "Birdseye maple isn't consistently rigid from headstock to pocket, and you have a greater possibility of it 'squirming'. It's an aesthetically pleasing grain to look at, but in the long term there's a good chance you can expect trouble if changes in seasons and humidity are a part of your life, and the greater the tension on the neck the greater the potential for the issue"

I'm considering one, but I'm unsure how I'd go about ordering or getting a quote. I live in the USA and I'm fine with a wait time. Just wanted to look a little more into it. Thanks for any help!

I didn't' have the luxury of trying one out before ordering. I had just heard tons of glowing reviews, and I couldn't be happier. I've fallen for the "talkbass recommends" stuff before, but my Moollon felt like a huge come up. Can't recommend them enough!

Yeah, man. If you're a Fender guy, don't hesitate what so ever on ordering a Moollon. If you're a Smith/Fodera, pre-amp kinda guy....then order one anyway. Seriously, you can't go wrong. Have a JV and a PV. Couldn't be happier. My Sadowsky's, Alien Audios and assorted funkier basses (Silvertone's, Harmony etc..) are gathering dust since getting hipped to Moollons.

I definitely appreciate the thoughts on your Moollons! I'm into many different flavors of basses.. but I'm going for a super vintage-y P vibe on this one and Moollon fits the bill perfectly on paper. I've heard nothing but good things, so I'm very interested at this point. I'm just waiting for a quote and waiting to sell my last couple of instruments up for sale... then I may have to go for it!

Thanks for sharing your experiences with them as well! I also have a Valenti (great bass). That's definitely good to know, and based on the reputation I'm not very hesitant about buying sight unseen at this point. They seem like great instruments from what I've heard and I'd be surprised if I didn't love it.

Also good to know! I wasn't sure how things would look after I checked the site and didn't see any US dealers. I'm glad to hear that this is clearly a normal thing and lots of you have done it before. Once I sell my Reverend guitar and my Thunderbird, I may just have to bite...

Someone already answered Pure Blues and AFAIK that's what they still come with .125 - .045. I've had them on and off of mine while trying some other options and IMHO they are great strings for that bass. Thanks to some encouragement from my friend Kenny Ames, I'm now using LaBella DTF 760FL-B. Those strings are such a perfect match for that bass and really brings out it's best qualities. I have EB Cobalt Flats on my P-IV Classic and love them but didn't love on the PV. I've given up trying to standardize on one string brand or type. If you're willing to experiment, the bass will eventually tell you which stings work best.

SHELL PINK!!! Yeah, man. If you're looking for a superb passive P, the P4 is SO much better than the Nash, Blues Man Vintage, Custom Shop and anything else I've played. YJ truly is a pre-CBS fanboy that has gotten it SO right. Proprietary pickups, 20 hand applied nitro coats, and for the me the kicker is producing his own tuning keys and bridges. All of this coupled w/ his love for pre-CBS gear and the result is perfection. AND the price points are VERY reasonable, IMHO. If for some reason you can't make peace w/ it, you can always sell and get back 75% of your investment. My 2 cents....worth every penny.
