Just snagged this guy from the classifieds! Man, it is sweet -- I've heard people say that if Fender made a 5 string in the 60s it'd sound and feel just like this. Feels like a very accurate description so far!

It has a pretty great 70's J tone, so it doesnt need to be "modern", but I want to use it for wedding/corporate gigs that cover a lot of territory from 70's funk to modern pop etc... So not wanting to make it something that its not, just wanting to have the versatility so I can play it all night on those gigs.
Bass arrived today, VERY nice!
I choose Black with the Macassar Ebony fretboard and a Tort pickguard.
It's classy and bad-ass all at once.
Sounds great, classic combo. Make sure to post pictures once it arrives
I've been playing around with running it through an Alien Bass Station for exactly the same reason and it sounds great. It's quite a vintage sounding preamp though so I'm not using it for an ultra modern sparkly sound, just to add some more bottom to the sound and for some compression. With both pickups on full and a bit of bass added it sounds pretty fitting in a modern pop context.

I am planning on sending a deposit soon on a classic P sorry if this has already been covered. Do you have to have your color selected when the deposit is placed or do you have some time to decide?
This will a hard decision for me I love a classic CAR but I also love the orange sparkle finish and the silver as well.

Guys, I’m thinking about ordering a replacement guard for this JV. The black isn’t quite floating my boat and it’s the only thing about the basses look that I’m not in love with. Having a hard time visualizing other options but I love the tort that YJ uses.
What do you guys think would look best?

The sparkle finishes aren't going to be available anymore from what Andi has said. They do still have a few sparkle finishes left for the P bodies and more colors left for the J bodies.
For the P they had sparkle bodies in rootbeer, red and gold as of early August, not sure if they still have them.
I came really close to going with red sparkle with a black pickguard but decided I can't pull off a flashy bass. It just wouldn't look right on me no matter how much I liked it.
I'm not sure if you have to be sure of the color before you put the deposit. Best to ask Andi regarding that.
Good luck deciding on a color though....I still like at least 8 colors they offer.
Andi was on vacation so I just got a response a week after I emailed them. He said he has a mountain of emails to go through so I'm sure he'll get back to you. I've had nothing but great dealings with him.
Definitely tortoise. On that note, does anyone know where Moollon gets their pickgaurds? The tort they use is really amazing.
Is that a rootbeer sparkle? It's hard to tell from the lighting....for me at least.

That’s awesome thanks, I couldn’t find any pics of root beer with Tort. I like that look, it has just enough contrast from the root beer, and Moolins tort is so nice. Probably the nicest tort guards out there.

Thanks to everyone hanging in there and waiting to hear back.
After being much too busy to take even a brief a summer break, my wife and I took a chunk of early September off in addition to the lengthy (extended) Harvest Moon holiday this past weekend, and were away most of the time to travel and do loads of sleeping, primarily checking the Moollon server for outgoing parcels and communicating with the most pressing of messages to pass on tracking info.
That said, I'm working my way down in reverse order, so apologies in advance for those waiting the longest. It will likely take another two days to get to everyone missed in the past few weeks.
- I'll also be uploading a "Basses of Summer 2019" post on the Moollon Basses of Facebook hopefully by this weekend for fans todrool over enjoy.
- Sparkles are indeed no longer in production, and the remaining bodies are surprisingly a tad on the heavy side, which is why YJ has recommended against purchasing them, unless a mid-weight build (total build weight 4.2kg -4.4kg on a J-IV or P-IV) is tolerable. That said, there should be one unclaimed Gold Sparkle and one Red Sparkle P-IV body each on the rack, when I last checked. Other details can be confirmed upon request.
- In ten days between late August and early September there was a customer surge with 8 orders confirmed back to back, so build time of anything from here on out should be assumed to require about 10 - 11 months.
- The supplier of our present 3-ply Tort guards was found locally here in Korea around 2013 and became the new standard after the original brown tort ran out. The company is technically unlisted only accepts orders in bulk, and unfortunately we cannot score blanks for even our own use.
- As of August 2018, all specs have to be 100% confirmed before the order is set and the (non-refundable) deposit sent.
- On the same note and as a gentle reminder, customer requests for mid-way finish/body changes were a massive headache for YJ in summer 2018 and are no longer permitted: Opportunity cost aside, if we were a company with multiple luthiers/worker handling various stages of builds then it would be different, but with YJ doing everything, one single change in finish can slow things down for everyone else in line. We're sure no one would be happy if a guy cut in line in front of you at In-n-Out Burger to slowly look over the menu and then ask for a "cheeseburger set with grilled onions" instead of a Double-Double he ordered five minutes ago. Common courtesy by being sure of what you want well ahead of time is good for everyone
