Club Moollon

Thanks to everyone hanging in there and waiting to hear back.

After being much too busy to take even a brief a summer break, my wife and I took a chunk of early September off in addition to the lengthy (extended) Harvest Moon holiday this past weekend, and were away most of the time to travel and do loads of sleeping, primarily checking the Moollon server for outgoing parcels and communicating with the most pressing of messages to pass on tracking info.

That said, I'm working my way down in reverse order, so apologies in advance for those waiting the longest. It will likely take another two days to get to everyone missed in the past few weeks.

- I'll also be uploading a "Basses of Summer 2019" post on the Moollon Basses of Facebook hopefully by this weekend for fans to drool over enjoy.

- Sparkles are indeed no longer in production, and the remaining bodies are surprisingly a tad on the heavy side, which is why YJ has recommended against purchasing them, unless a mid-weight build (total build weight 4.2kg -4.4kg on a J-IV or P-IV) is tolerable. That said, there should be one unclaimed Gold Sparkle and one Red Sparkle P-IV body each on the rack, when I last checked. Other details can be confirmed upon request.

- In ten days between late August and early September there was a customer surge with 8 orders confirmed back to back, so build time of anything from here on out should be assumed to require about 10 - 11 months.

- The supplier of our present 3-ply Tort guards was found locally here in Korea around 2013 and became the new standard after the original brown tort ran out. The company is technically unlisted only accepts orders in bulk, and unfortunately we cannot score blanks for even our own use.

- As of August 2018, all specs have to be 100% confirmed before the order is set and the (non-refundable) deposit sent.

- On the same note and as a gentle reminder, customer requests for mid-way finish/body changes were a massive headache for YJ in summer 2018 and are no longer permitted: Opportunity cost aside, if we were a company with multiple luthiers/worker handling various stages of builds then it would be different, but with YJ doing everything, one single change in finish can slow things down for everyone else in line. We're sure no one would be happy if a guy cut in line in front of you at In-n-Out Burger to slowly look over the menu and then ask for a "cheeseburger set with grilled onions" instead of a Double-Double he ordered five minutes ago. Common courtesy by being sure of what you want well ahead of time is good for everyone :)

This guy! Thanks for the update and the great customer service! Hope you had a wonderful and well deserved vacation.

Ooof 10-11 months. Glad I got one in before that. Not as professional a photo as a lot of you take... just a little practice time.

The sparkle finishes aren't going to be available anymore from what Andi has said. They do still have a few sparkle finishes left for the P bodies and more colors left for the J bodies.

For the P they had sparkle bodies in rootbeer, red and gold as of early August, not sure if they still have them.
I came really close to going with red sparkle with a black pickguard but decided I can't pull off a flashy bass. It just wouldn't look right on me no matter how much I liked it.

I'm not sure if you have to be sure of the color before you put the deposit. Best to ask Andi regarding that.

Good luck deciding on a color though....I still like at least 8 colors they offer.
Thank you Bassic Needs the info and Andi for the clarifying the order process. I will place an order as soon as I choose the color I once waited 18 months on a bass 10-11 months is no big deal. In a weird way I like the wait time It gives you a extra push to work harder and something to look forward to!

Just one small change in policy that will be mentioned with all future orders as of October 1st, 2019.

Background: After the implementation of the $449 deposit policy in 2018 in order to help us deal with loss of opportunity cost and run-of-the-mill tire kickers and customers suddenly requesting major changes to their orders mid-way, sudden cancellations fortunately have since gone down. Just the same, YJ wants to be reasonable and provide a narrow grace period, in case folks get cold feet.

Change: If the deposit was paid via PayPal, then a full refund can be provided if we are notified of order cancellation within 2 weeks of originally paying the deposit. However, bank wire transfer deposits are final and non-refundable...YJ has to take care of all company banking himself, and he taking trips to the bank and waiting upwards of an hour to file a wire transfer abroad slows down work for everyone.

Thanks from us three here at Moollon!

How did you go about installing the tugbar? It looks real nice. Was there a template?

YJ will do vintage-position screw-hole drilling (guard and body) for installation of ashtrays and thumbrest, and if a customer sends us the gear prior to assembly, then any of them can be installed in-shop as well (as in the above case). The same goes for gold anodized guards when requested, which we are also unable to source over here. YJ recommends that customers send a 1957 reissue piece: Link Removed

It looks real nice for a reason, Young Joon installed it himself! I bought my ash trays and tug bar on my own, then shipped them to YJP to have them masterfully installed at the time of build. I figured if I was buying this Moollon in place of a true vintage bass, I might as well get it as close to a true vintage Fender as possible.

By the way @Joe Clark it was your new bass pic from when you first got your Moollon that finally sent me over the edge in ordering mine! Sonic Blue baby!

Hey guys, I just bought these Moollon P-pickups and according to the seller they were taken out of a 2012 Moollon P-bass. I believe they are legit, but you never know...would anyone be able to confirm? Thanks!

Hi Ahort.

Wound in April 2012. The split-coil pickup is a standard Moollon VP-60 (AlNiCo V) as found on all Moollon P-Classic IVs, the "VP Custom" always meaning that it was wound with a slight deviance from the 10.5k ohm resistance (as measured at room temperature) that is targeted when winding the VP-60 for all customer orders.

Note that knowing YJ's strict adherence to vintage principle and no room for exceptions, the pickup will not be severely overwound or underwound, but it's safe to say that it will indeed lean one direction or another, hence YJ's transparency by labeling it "VP-Custom" and not just "VP-60".

It makes total sense. Thanks a lot!

Here is an image for the output readings.

Hi All. FedEx just delivered a well-loved, second-hand Moollon Classic J 5 in white/tort. There isn't a ton of data on the web site, so maybe you can confirm, is the fingerboard radius 12"?

I'm amazed how flat I can get the neck with no buzzing, almost Sadowsky levels of low action. And this B is killer.

It's most likely a 12" radius; that's what is says in the Bass Player magazine review of that bass:

I see you edited your original question/comment. Give the Moollon some time to breathe and acclimate to its new home.

IMO the word "Sadowsky" will leave your vocabulary as you get to know the Moollon, because there's no comparison. (Yeah, I'm biased :) )

No doubt. My Sadowsky's are dust collectors at this point. Going to be moving em soon to make room for more Moollon's.
