Club Sadowsky!!!

Wouldn't grain provide visual clues as to density, weight and other characteristics that impact on tone?

That's along the lines of what I was pondering. Yes sure, the actual grain pattern is most likely not going to affect tone directly but possibly grain may be an indicator of density or stiffness perhaps. There is obviously a good reason why the grain is always running parallel with the string.

I would really like to hear Roger's thoughts if he should happen to have the time and inclination to comment.

Hey Ben,
Just saw this. I remember you mentioned to me last time about your anticipated NYC build. This is really turning out very nicely. Great to see it when it's all done! cheers..

Hey George! Yes you are partially responsible for this! Starting with the awesome Metro PJ5 that you sold me and then it was actually #6032 on your website that this build has been heavily influenced by.

Here is the finished top in all it's glory!

Masterpiece! You're very lucky!

I've been following this thread and am curious if given a choice, which would you rather have: a pre-CBS fender or a sadowsky? Now I know that they have different sounds and uses, but if the value of an old pre-CBS fender was taken away, and it was just instrument vs instrument regardless of value or cost, which would you choose?

Criteria would be sound, build quality, materials used, etc.

The reason I ask is because once I have enough money, I want to either buy a pre-CBS fender or a sadowsky. I understand the sound difference and that's not a factor in my decision.

Edit: I forgot to add - the bass is a player, not a show piece.

You are asking that question in the The Sadowsky owners thread? What do you think we are gonna say!!

:D

Sadowsky 100% -- easy choice for me, because I play five string exclusively. :p

If I still played four, then the decision would be tougher. First thing first: the Sadowsky is a far better bass in terms of build quality and fretwork. OTOH, there is something special about the old Fenders. My favorite necks are on well-played pre-CBS P-basses, where the nitro finish has worn off and the maple is grungy from sweat/oil/tobacco/beer/blood/whatever.

Then of course there are the tonal differences. A Sadowsky is not quite a Fender, and it's not supposed to be, not even in passive mode. The best vintage Fenders have a tonal mojo about them. I don't necessarily think it's because of age... it might well be that the necks are supported by a single truss rod, no steel or graphite reinforcement as is standard on modern basses. That said, Sadowsky basses have their own tonal mojo due to the electronics and design. When comparing the two, "better" or "worse" don't come into play, they're just different, with preference being purely subjective.

I also have to mention that dead spots are common on Fenders, but minimal or nonexistent on Sadowskys. It's not a big deal for some -- I believe Marcus Miller said that his famous J-bass has a weak spot but he knows how to work with it or avoid it. Me, I enjoy not having to worry about it. :)

I'll always have a place in my heart for the Fender vibe, and would some day like to add an American Standard Precision V to my collection (being that there are no true vintage Fender fivers -- the Bass V does not count), but the Fender would never replace Sadowsky as my #1 gig bass.

Bencue - that top is absolutely stunning! Koa? Wow. One of the nicest tops I've seen on a Sadowsky. Incredible. But the idea of a pickguard on that (even a clear one) makes me want to cry! :crying:

Edit - just saw that it's a vintage tint so I'm guessing maple and not koa.

Yes, thank you. Very blessed. It is my 40th b'day present and a culmination of many years of admiring Sadowsky basses!

The top is Koa on Ash.

Before the build commenced, I photoshopped about a dozen of the master grade tops (at scale) and carefully considered what a guard would and would not actually cover and look like. It's going to be alright. Thanks everyone for your concern!

Hi guys!

Sorry for the off-topic, but I want to be part of Sadowsky family again :)

I would like to trade my new Fbass BNF6 for a Sadowsky NYC 5 Standard with Birdseye Maple or Ebony fingerboard. The Sadowsky should be in similar new conditions. For additional info on the Fbass please visit this website:

or PM me: [email protected]

Cheers!

I think a tort guard will bring out the colors of the Koa very nicely. Either way it would be amazing.
