If I remember correctly it's the location where the strings hit at the end of the fretboard that gives it a different sound when you're slapping and popping.
I wish Roger would make a 22 fret with 1.5 neck width.. i had a gorgeous will Lee but found the neck too thin.I have a ms4 and if it had 22 frets . Would be the perfect bass
If you're talking about Metros, then there's a noticeable difference between the Modern 24 and J-style basses is mostly because of the difference in pickup location. The Modern pickups are closer to the bridge than the J, so you'll get a more modern growly tone. It can be especially effective on the low B, but of course it affects all strings on the bass.
If you're ordering an NYC Modern, you can order one with pickups in the J-bass locations, so you'll get the same essential tone as a J-bass. As explained by others, the ergonomics of the extra frets may affect slap tone even if the pickups don't. However the Sadowsky Modern is brilliant because you get Fender style ergonomics even though the neck has 24 frets. With most other 24-fretters, the bridge is pushed toward the middle of the body to allow access to the upper frets. It affects the way the bass balances, the way it hangs on the strap... it pushes the lower frets farther away from you requiring longer reach (unless you shift the bass over)... and it often increases neck dive. The Sadowsky Modern provides upper-fret access by use of a deeper cutaway, but the bridge is still near the end of the body, and the top horn still reaches the 12th fret. So, you have the same access to the lower frets, and no increased risk of neck dive.
Talkin bout the 24 fret Jstyles. Have a modern fretless 5 though and I agree with all of the above.

My Sadowsky collection is complete (for now).
New-to-me Metro MV5-PJ arrived yesterday. Weighs 8lb 7oz. Gigged her last night, and I couldn't be happier.
I really got the Sadowsky bug after buying a Metro Will Lee in January. That motivated me to upgrade to a Sadowsky preamp in my Fender P Deluxe.

I havent posted here for a long time, i quit bass to pursue another career but now im back and the first thing im gonna do is buy myself the best bass guitar ever made : a NYC Sadowsky!!!!
I use to have one but had to let it go for a girlfriend... yea we have all been there!
Well now id like some advice has anyone bought a solid body Sadowsky recently? How does it feel / sound play? -
(I plan top get the vintage model without the pick guard to make it look like a regular modern version only with a solid body)

pretty sure solid body is an option on any NYC, sans PG too, unless it's a P-bass.
I've never played an NYC Sadowsky, but my Metro MV5 is the best bass I've ever played. Based on that I'd say the NYC's are pretty incredible. 
I don't think it matters what you get, it's gonna play & sound great, but I like the single coil pickups better than the hum canceling.

Just remember: there are a lot more women in the world than Sadowsky's, but you can never go wrong with a Sadowsky. The right woman is a lot harder to find.

So, I'm a dyed-in-the-wool PBass guy ... who also likes the Low B string. Through my gear journey I also discovered that for MY tastes Roger Sadowsky's instruments have a presence in the mix/on the stage that is IMO unparalleled. This lead me to a lot of Metro's, a few NYC's, all of different wood combos/body styles/etc, all of which is too long to recount here.
Suffice to say, I thought I was set. Smoking NYC PJ5 (ash/braz rw/there's pics in this thread) and an out-of-this-world fretless Modern 5 on a PBass body (pics somewhere as well). But then eventually I realized that I needed a good ol' ash/maple JBass, so that when I rip off Marcus Miller it's a little more obvious. 'That sound' definitely works on a BUNCH of gigs.
So I thought I'd go straight at the thing:
It even SAYS "Marcus Miller" on the headstock. The site above seemed to indicate that they had those in stock, so I puts my money down. VERY LITTLE skin in the game, and hoping that it would at least be in the ballpark of what I'm used to.
Well, then the site emails me and say it'll be until October that they have that in stock. Now, a rational person would've just said 'Oh well, I'll wait until then and/or find it somewhere else'. But I've never been strictly rational when it came to gear. So this happened:

lol , yea you got it! Well the girlfriend has long gone, should have kept that beauty (the bass!)
Yea i will ask Roger if its better to go for a metro although I love the whole vibe of the NYC ordering / waiting/ customer service all awesome!

This has been said by many here before, I think including Roger:
Metro and NYC quality are the same great thing. Unless you have specific woods or colors or weight goals not offered in the Metro line, there's not really a need to buy an NYC model.
