I had a Will Lee metro and loved the sound of the SC PU's.
Swapped out the HC to SC on my MV5-24 and I am much happier. Mids are there and the Vintage sort of sound is there as well.

When we discuss a bass order or purchase with someone, we always state that the benchmark against which all pickups are measured are single coils. We also state that the goal of a humcancelling pickup is to get as close to a single coil as possible without the hum. We then have the conversation regarding playing with both pickups on full, vs favoring the neck or bridge and the resulting single coil hum. Then, it is up to the player to decide on what would be the best choice for their needs. We also have just as many people who prefer the humcancelling pickups as the single coils. We are certainly Pro-Choice at Sadowsky!

The new HCs are great pickups, less scooped than the old ones. I have always felt like the HCs (either era) add some P-bass like lows to a J sound, and a little compression, which is pretty rad. FAT. The singles have more of the normal J-bass punch and grind, and are more dynamic. The new singles are super high mid grindy but very rich sounding with a relatively rolled off top. The old singles are a little flatter and drier (I prefer the old). All are great in their own way. I find with the HCs I cant use the EQ very much without getting too scooped, with the singles I can dial in a fat preamp scoop and it still holds together.

Hmm... My RV4 was produced in April of 2011. I wonder if it 'made the cut' so to speak.

Check out the latest Sadowsky to my collection. It arrived around noon last Saturday and I used it on 3 gigs that same weekend. I love it, and so did my sound engineer. It joins my fretted NYC 4 and Metro 5.

I made a comparison video today of the Sadowsky Humcancelling pickups vs the Single coil jazz pickups. Everything I've ever read online has been people trying to describe the sound of these pickups using close-to-meaningless words that we bass players have invented meanings for, so I thought this might help some people.

Very nice playing, soong! I much preferred the SC on your fingerstyle examples, but if truth be told, I kinda liked the HC on your slap lines. But since I never slap, I'm more than happy with the SC on my Metro WL!

If I were to go thru every tonal possibility comparing the pickups it'd start to get tedious. No one likes sitting thru long videos. I think you can imagine the rest based on what I've demo'd.

Very useful video that one - good onya Soong.

I use HCs on my J5 and find the more modern tone across all 5 strings suits me.
My J4 has SCs which are much more typically 'jazz' sounding which I like for the older classic rock stuff that was originally played on 4-strings with open 'E's.
Best of both worlds IMO.

So I bought a used Metro, an RV4, with HC pickups. I wanted to dip my feet in the Sadowsky stream. It had an faint distortion in the mids and no bite to the sound. It took me about a week to figure it out, fiddling with bass EQ, new battery, new strings. My conclusion: This is one of the best basses I've ever played.

It feels familiar, as I'm a Jazz bass player, but is tighter. It balances really well, sitting or standing. It is a comfortable 9 pounds or a so, maybe less. Frets, nut, etc are perfect. It gets burpy with a small turn of the blend, dialing in some bridge. The two band is perfect, never sounds intrusive. Great sustain, maybe a little less playing a C on the G string. I don't notice this while playing. I gigged it twice with my funk outfit. This is where it really distinguishes itself. Finger style is fantastic, cutting through but not in an aggresive "hyper boosted mids" sort of way. The slap tone is really exceptional live. Only my '95 Warwick gets close. In a nutshell it really is a super Jazz bass. My '75 Jazz feels clutsy and awkward in comparison. If I get another one I'm getting the SC pickups, just for variety.
