The portabag is heavier than the Vertigo and does not hang on the straps in nearly as nice of a position. For me anyway. Portabag is a great case though and offers excellent protection. I just find the ergonomics of the Vertigo much better for me.
I don’t understand something…every bag I have - Protec Contego, Mono M80 Dual, Sadowsky Portabag, Gator Pro-Go Dual - I’m able to take the basses out while the case is standing up. Unzip it, pull the bass out.
The Continental Voyager has a hard frame and a hard plate in the lid. It's almost like a case and opens as such. You need to open the zipper all the way around to open the lid and that won't work well if the bag is standing on it. I just tried it, and when I angle the bag back pretty far it somewhat works. On the Vertigo the zipper goes all around the neck on both sides and then the upper half of the lid folds forward so you can easily pull the bass out vertically.

As a touring bassist, I have a Protec CONTEGO that I love!
Enough hard perimeter to survive the bus bays. My only complaint is the pockets should be square for music books etc. They are rounded on mine, ***?

I also just picked up a Gator gig bag... it was an open box, but like new. Problem is, the shoulder strap location is too low it does not sit right... I guess why it was on sale! 70.00 so I can't complain, but I will!

Top loading, this is why I use the Vertigo rather then the otherwise excellent Portabag that came with my Sadowsky. I also find the Vertigo more comfortable to wear...it's where it sits on your back. I play small jazz gigs in pubs that never have much space, so the Vertigo is also where my bass stays when I'm not using it...safer than a guitar stand in these places.
it seems like something that people obsess over without actually using the cases. I almost never lay my m80 down and unzip all the way yet it goes to multiple gigs per week. Sometimes the bass goes back in it on break and stands in a corner out of the way, always while loading from the top
I use a Mooradian bag, and love it. Unfortunately they are no longer in business, but I have 2 singles and one of their double bags. Nice usable pockets. Occasionally they show up in the classifieds.
same here... never had a problem with my portabags upright. just a slight lean against the wall, works fine.
I just realized I’ve passed into “Old Crank-hood.” I’m still using my two Reunion Blues bags, which I bought 30 years ago. I’ve got the Cordura one, which is for FSO’s (so, the NYC goes in that one) and a leather classic design for the “boutique” instruments. They’ve been to hundreds of gigs at this point and are still going strong. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
FWIW, here is the headstock area on the Cordura bag with my clip on gadget pouch and the stuff that I keep in the pouch. Same thing on my leather bag. and of course my “beads of courage” on the zipper.

I don't think anybody was obsessing about anything. I simply pointed out that one of the bags (The Continental Voyager) out of many that I have owned will not allow you to slip out the bass without being fully unzipped all the way around. The frame and lid are too rigid, you will not get an opening large enough to get out the bass otherwise. All my other bags work just the way you describe.

Every bag is going to have some compromises, you just have to figure which ones you can live with. For me, the Vertigo has enough protection, storage and allows me to get the bass in and out in small spaces the easiest. I also have the Tick attachment bag for my mono cases, so that helps with storage. The first time I saw the video with Victor Wooten lifting the bass straight out of the bag, I knew that was for me. I'm not taking public transportation or flying with it, not trying to carry a class d amp in the pocket (which it won't, unless maybe one of those ultra small 1/2 rack space sized ones), carry a change of clothes or stuff for a fly date, but for walking to and from the car, having it sit by my side or between me and the bar while I'm at a blues jam, occasionally bumping a corner or the ceiling in a stairwell or a doorframe, carrying a bass, Sadowsky neoprene strap with straploks (to make this Sadowsky related 
), clip on tuner, a couple of cables and maybe an ipad/laptop/sheet music/real book, the Vertigo is the best bag for me.
And for the record, I have/have had/have tried the Contigo (which I like and do recommend as it's a very good bag, especially at the price), the ProTec gold series that comes standard with Mike Lulls, a Portabag (which is the Mercedes of bags, but it is big and heavy), the Mono M80 (single and double, own a double), Undercover (both single and double, which I think may be the coolest looking bags), Warwick buffalo leather (which I think is made by Harvest Leather), plenty of cheap bags, and I'm sure some I've forgot (there's a pile of them in the corner of my bass-ment
), and I almost always grab the Vertigo (gotta' use the matching F Bass bag with the BN5). Ymmv.
