Jim, at some point, you should do a Sadowsky bass "family pic". I know you have some of their awesome guitars too, but at least I don't care about those. It would be cool to see all your basses tho. :D

I will can oblige albeit it would be cool to wait until I get the 4th bass in the pic. ..and with the g/f too, thank you for the approval. Same g/f still in da house. :)

The bass I ordered is going to be uberpimp cool or completely nauseating to some. I'm not giving details as I don't think words will do it justice.

Definitely closer to the alder/rosewood end of the spectrum, IMO. To my ears, it's somewhat darker, more organic sounding with an emphasis in the low-mids. Yet, it still "sounds like a Sadowsky" and cuts through a mix with the same clarity and punch. Awesome bass!

Definitely. She's pretty cool about these things. In the racked SA200 pic she actually was lifting it which made things look a bit muscular and firm.

Mahogany

I asked this of aTBer with alder and mahogany Modern 5s both with ebony boards and he described this:

The mahogany is more aggressive sounding, with enhanced mids. It's growly but not boxy (low mids are not too enhanced ... it's mostly mid mids and high mids).

Hmmmm... IMHO/IME, Mahogany IS about low mids. In fact, I have a FSR (pre Fender) Tacoma ThunderChief that has a Mahogany top for this exact reason... to project more in the lows and low mids than Spruce.

Most of the Mahogany basses I've played also have not only a fairly pronounced low/low mid profile, but also a somewhat subdued high mid/high end. The first part was ok with me, but the second part was not, so I've since pretty much restricted myself to ash and alder bodies.

One caveat to this. I've played Tom's anniversary 24F-5 with the Mahogany body and it works VERY nicely on that bass... but mainly because that's such an aggressive bass up a bit higher anyway, it compliments the formula.

I definitely agree it's growly but not boxy tho. In fact, it's very "big" and/or "thick" sounding to me.

IMHO anyway.

yeh but what he does makes for a good show!! :D And at least he agrees with me: that he is very animated.:hiding: Heck he even got Fred to do some headbanging at the show!!;) (but you are probably right.... it is slightely an understament :D )

Fuggit! Not only did I order a custom bass today but I also got this one a few days ago and am keeping it for now.

You know how we say a Sadowsky is like a Fender on steroids? This is like a Sadowsky on steroids.

The tone of the Sadowsky soaps in J bass location with an ash body and maple board is insane! Fat as Oprah at a pie eating contest and super sweet.

+1 I'd just add full, yet clear, low-mids (and in fact, greater clarity from top to bottom than people might expect), with that added high end cut/ping from the ebony board.

I don't really hear any lack of high mids or highs with mahogany, especially compared to alder. What might happen, though, is that your ears get tricked into thinking there is less going on up high, because there is more going down low (and again, more in the low mids).

But, to the extent that some may be inspired to 'goose' the highs a bit when dealing with a mahogany bodied bass, that is where ebony makes such a great match (IME/IMHO).
