Club Sadowsky!!!

Another difference with the Will Lee is that (at least on the NYC models), the bass comes with a drop-D tuner, a feature I've never had on a bass before but suddenly found myself using on a gig the other night. I'm not sure if the metros will have that or not.

I'm looking at picking up a 4 string to mess with (only playing 5s for the past decade +), and one candidate has a D-tuner. For the life of me I can't see how I'd incorporate that. Do you drop at the beginning of a tune and then transpose notes on the fly, or just grab it for a short section of a tune or ? My brain cannot process such variables :D

While you can drop during a song, I most commonly use the D-tuner just before we start a song in drop-D tuning. I seem to have 1-2 songs per set in drop-D tuning, so a 4-string with a D-tuner works great (for me).

Just wanted to say that that's great news about Greg Lake. He's was a major influence back when I first started playing. Awesome that he's getting back with Emerson and Palmer.

On the Metro Will Lee...

If they're going to run the same weight as the regular Metros, is there a point in getting one over those? I was hoping they would be lightweight too, but just not available with the fancy tops.

The point is that a Metro WL costs $1000 less than a comparable NYC.

Right, I get that. But I guess to me weight is more important than a fancy top or graphite neck bars. Not trying to start any argument or anything, just asking.
Understood, but that won't be everybody's same priority list. This is just Roger giving people a choice based on whatever is most important to them. Makes sense to me.

I use it at the beginning of the song if the song require it or if needed during the song, it takes me 2 seconds to drop D or regular E back and forth. There is people that goes all the way to C on their tuner and works perfectly fine :)

+1

Now that I'm playing fivers I no longer use Hipshots, but I had them on all my fours. I agree with what folks have been saying: once they're properly adjusted and broken in (perhaps with a little graphite on the nut, but I never needed that), it's a breeze to switch in and out of drop-D tuning. I used to flip back and forth multiple times within the same song, and still be in tune.

I was interested with anyone's experience with the mid-boost on the WL...I am about to place a build order and am wondering if I would use it enough to warrant going for a WL instead of a 24-4.
I play a lot of lead type solos with my group, and have wondered if it would be useful to give a bit of boost for a lead.
How are people using this mid-boost?
Anyone love the mid-boost?

Thanks in advance,
Scott

IMHO, it's all about using it sparingly. I liked the wide Q but with the gain set minimally so it was just a mild punch enhancer. Sadowskys cut so well already that more than that just seemed too much to me.

I found two distinct uses for the mid-boost. One was to give you a little extra oomph to cut through a mix when things get busy. The other is the ability to dial in the character of the "growl" - to an extent, this allows you to make it sound more like a 70's J-bass or more like a 60's J-bass by fine-tuning the Q, the frequency, and the boost level. After playing around with it for some time, I found the mid-boost to be a more useful feature than I had initially anticipated.

For me, the mid-boost, combined with the neck shape and D-tuner, make the Will Lee Model a compelling option (as opposed to a similarly equipped JJ Sadowsky). The extra fret and deeper cutaway are nice, too, but I for one don't make any money up there anyway. :D

Tom.

I haven't watched it for a couple of years, but this year I'm watching American Idol. I was at rehearsal last night so I taped the performance show. During Lee DeWyze's performance the camera cut to the band's bass player twice.

Voila, a nice Sadowsky shot with the headstock and logo in clear sight. Taking a pic of my TV when my analog=dinosaur VCR was on PAUSE doesn't really show how clear the shot was. During the broadcast, in motion, it must have been as clear as day. Nice vintage-size tuners on that rascal too. Great bass face.

Roger must have been happy. Only about a bazillion people saw one of his babies on stage. Definitely not in the bottom three.

Watch it in 480p, around 2:26 - 2:34 in the vid.
