I'm sure there are ones out there, I'll try to keep an eye out for you as well.
For me that actual bass did not resonate, he is asking too much and it's been on for nearly a year, but I prefer the new bridge.

Those Kloppman pups interest me, looking them up they should give you a real vintage sound.

A basic, non-aged 48 shouldn't cost more than 1300$ (as seen on Thomann.de). The Hardcore Aged/Masterpiece ones run about 2k$. You are better off buying from a european store. If you send the configurator code to Thomann, they can give you a price. I ordered my custom VT through them (should have it soon after a 9 month wait).

Gentlemen and ladies.

I love the look of the Forty Eight and I am sure at some point I will cave in, however I wanted to know what is under the pick covers as I have read many different reports.

Some say HH (not my preferred)
Some say split P neck and H bridge (essentially a VM bass but a cool shape)
Some say H neck and split P bridge (my preferred to be different!)

Can anyone tell me what it is, or is it all of them if you get it customised?!

I believe the 48 pick up configuration is Sandbergs power Humbucker for the bridge and a split P for the neck.

Regarding the power H, I like the fact that it is not overpowering like a Musicman, it is powerful but retains a nice clarity. It is more of a halfway house IMO but I'd rather that than that big fat MM sound for what I want.

If that is the case, body shape aside, is it not a re-packaged whichever VM bass you want, with the same pre-amp in a different body, or is there something else to differentiate?

Yeah I guess, that something else is the cool factor!

I really love the look of th 48 and when I have the money to get one I really hope it does not disappoint. I have read they are Alder bodies and fairly light, and I'm sure I read a review complaining of severe neck dive Maybe I'll consider a custom build with an Ash body

Don't believe the neck dive hype, people aka sit about my G&L ASAT and it was all poo, yes it was a bit more horizontal, but it by no means went for the floor. It helped I'm a plodder who rarely visits anything above the 7th fret or I get a nervous sweat!
Looks like we may be battling on the same ground in the UK for that Forty Eight!
We'll have to agree on who likes which colour more and then let him win that one!

It would be interesting to hear what people have to say about the following and any differences, all 4 string

VM
VM supreme
VM nighthawk
VM Oliver Riedel
Forty Eight (if it is P neck H bridge)

Are there slight pick up location differences?
Pre-amp?
Tonal differences to wood mass etc.

Any info is helpful

So I had an email chat with the guy from Chicago Music Exchange who helped design it.

In its classic form it's 2 humbuckers with a Glockenlang pre-amp, but in all likelihood he said you can have it configured anyway you want if you place an order direct

Mate you are quite right about the neck dive, just last night I had mine out to try different strap positions. As a Les Paul player, I feel more comfortable with the bass in that kind of position. I have tried wearing the bass higher but I feel like I'm wearing Polo neck trousers... Aarrrggghhhhhh

Here is my take on mine

Ken Taylor - the heaviest of the bunch but hangs in the perfect position.... same as my Les Pauls
VM - the lightest and easily the most comfortable, It also hangs like a LP too... the perfect bass
VS - not quite as light as the VM, balances more horizontal but does not actually fall below horizontal
TT - somewhere in between the KT and VM weight wise, again it balances more horizontal.... still my favourite though.

Mark Najjar the bass guy there is pretty helpful. Matt Kashuda is my guitar guy, he's pretty awesome as well.

@TB24 exactly the man. It was Mark I was talking to via Facebook messenger, answered within a couple of hours, seems really cool.

@DJ'65 thanks for that info. Glad you agree with me that near to horizontal is normal, if it's round my nipples, it ain't being done right!
I use a Levy extra long strap so the playing zone is near my nether regions and the natural Jazz balance is a slight up tilt which suits. In fact the MarloweDK is a wonderfully balanced instrument.

VS4 has not yet been out in anger played with a strap yet but from what you say looks like it will be the beans. I'll try it with a few of my other straps but if the Levy is king I'll have to get a second one.

This thread is nooooooooooo good for GAS....

A bit late I know... but could I get a number please?

Added some MOP dot markers to the TM5, and replaced the original (heavy) tuners with the newer lightweight Sandberg tuners which shaved almost half a kilo off the weight and completely transformed the balance. It was not a simple upgrade as the new tuners are a slightly smaller diameter than the originals... but the end result has been fantastic. I'll post photos of the process later if anybody is interested.
