The Jeffersons star Sherman Hemsley had a secret LSD lab and recorded an album with YES singer Jon Anderson stemming from accounts by Gong founder Daevid Allen who visited Hemsley's home in the late 1970s describing Hemsley as a "very personable, charming guy" who was surrounded by "really crazy people" in a surreal scene that included a sign on the front door that read, "Don't answer the door because it might be the man". the LSD laboratory in the basement was run by two Puerto Rican guys with crack/freebase depots on every floor, plus a Flying Teapot room (referencing a Gong album) where the band's music played on a loop. Hemsley was an big fan of psychedelic progressive rock and a jazz keyboardist who released an R&B album called Dance in 1992. Hemsley collaborated with YES singer Jon Anderson on a rock opera project called Festival of Dreams in the late 1990s. Hemsley wrote the lyrics for the project, which was about the "spiritual qualities of the number 7", however, the album was never officially released.

Led Zeppelin were on the original wish list but later considered too expensive for the first California Jam which was to be called The Pay Concert, set for Dec. 29 1973. ABC shmucked it all up, Jorn Winther was brought in to reboot and carry it through to wild success for the April 6 1974 date. it was great, a magnificent 12hr mega show without a hitch, no issues of any kind, everybody was happy and able to be in bed by midnight. but who's bed? lol Zep likely would have been crap compared to what we got and the crowd would have been far rowdier. it was our West Coast Woodstock in a nice little well organized nutshell with terrific sound. a few years later they repeated the event with an even bigger bill, but it didn't match the magic of the first.
