Covers Better Than The Original

The Neville Brothers' "Yellow Moon" album is outstanding and is mostly covers. They're all great but the cover of Dylan's "With God On Our Side" is not to be missed. Nothing fancy about it other than Aaron Neville's exquisite voice.

Also as someone said earlier, Beatles covers are dangerous, especially Come Together which has been done horribly. This version, by Oz Noy's Ozone Squeeze project, is very good.

These are the first that come to mind. A few years ago, my band played on a bill with another band that did Jason & The Scorchers' kicking version of "Country Roads," and they were shocked I knew it. They clearly were trying to pass it off as their own version. Lame.

And I like Slayer's "Dissident Aggressor" about as much as the mighty Judas Priest original:

This one is one of my favorites. I grew up in Jacksonville, Fl. during the rise of Molly Hatchet, they were pretty humorous in the fact that they pretty much patterened everything they did after Lynyrd Skynyrd. I have to give them props for this one though, to me it's so much better than the Allman Bros. version i think mainly do to higher energy. YMMV.

I never thought Louie Louie could be a song I actually liked. As a player in the 60s, bands were forced into playing it along with La Bamba and various Chuck Barry hits, whether you wanted to or not. On a Thanksgiving trip to Mom's in the 80s a radio station played Louie Louie all day long, many, many versions. But, on Beware(!) an album by Barry White, he redid Louie Louie and took it to a new heights! Who would have thought it?
