can definitely hear more heft in the SL/3015 combinations and the mids/highs I found surprisingly nice compared to the JBLs, but as you say they're a little more clanky.

Perhaps your idea of transplanting aluminum domes onto the 3015s will get you closer to the JBLs?

Very nice work, now I'm thinking of doing a 1-15 based on your Vb and Fb w/the 3015, that'd make for an easier schlep for smaller gigs.

But at the end of the day the winner to my ears was the SVT/JBL combo

that's my favorite combo too, but probably the biggest difference for me would be the weight (and size) schlepping them.

SVT= 85lbs + 75lb 2x15 JBL cab= 160lbs
STM= 6.5lbs + 46.5lb 3015 cab= 53lbs.

Thanks for the Dan clips, nice playing. Hearing your bass in a solo context, my fave is the STM900 driving the 3015's, great tone. If you feel so inclined, I'd like to hear the same combo with one and/or both ports blocked.

i would have to remove the grill to block the ports so i don't see myself doing that any time soon.
i'll make a couple of comparison clips of it open and blocked when i install the aluminum dust caps on the 3015's, but it won't be until some time next week.

I like both the K140 and 3015 with the SVT.

Although the K140's sound like they have a more complex character, I imagine that they are a little more broken in than the 3015's. The 3015's have more definition to my ears. Maybe it would be just a matter of tweaking the EQ a bit.

I would't say no to either cab.

i agree, i'm going to run my signal generator thru the 3015's for a while to loosen them up a bit.

Still sounds great! Very similar to the TL606 2x15.

I too, prefer the SVT over the STL. Probably because my RH450 sounds more like the SVT...

Was also going to suggest a break-in period for the 3015s... Mine settled and became smoother after about 18-20 hours playing time (5-6 gigs).

now after listening to them, the 3015's actually have a little MORE top end but, IMO, they're a bit clankier about it, whereas the JBL's are smoother, but they do have less low end........ so it turns out that i'm really digging the 3015's really just as much as my beloved old JBL's. too bad that neo's are so expensive these days, since the 3015's cost as much or more now as a used K140.

Please tell me you recorded these clips a little too hot, and the distortion is from your gear clipping!! If not, it's in my signal chain, and I've got work to do...

the levels were very low on my H4n's meters, but the distortion is definitely coming from the H4n (it doesn't appear to like low end). it has a light that blinks when it exceeds it's capable level and it was occasionally blinking on some of the notes, but if i recorded it any lower the level wouldv'e been next to nothing.

Hmm, yea the SVT/K140 clip is distorted - so I like the SVT/3015 clip best.

there's a little distortion due to the H4n, but i think that you're hearing more fret rattle than anything else. i played P pretty hard on thse clips.

There is in fact a little bit of an overdriven signal in the clip. I'm hearing it hear at my place too.

I liked the JBL's over the 3015's for their 350hz-700hz "woolyness". There was a nice way the notes sound just at the very beginning of their attack that would provide a nice cushion to a band if this had been more than just a solo track. Maybe the 3015's will develop this characteristic after they break in? I loved the girth of the 3015 low end though...very sweet. Acoustic 320 pretty please?

The STM900/3015s combination sounds huge, maybe too huge for a band... ? Depends on the band, obviously..... Anyway, I like the the more midrangy tone of the K140s better.

John, this morning I read this - what do you think and did your software model give this as an option, etc?

I have a 215 cab design that is much like JohnK's except it provides more port area (round ports). Soon it could be available in 8-ohm as well as 4-ohm. I've been considering whether to release it either in finished form or as a kit. Same thing in 115, but half the size.

EDIT: would your 215 design benefit any from extra port area?

i think more port area just guarantees that it wouldn't chuff, but mine has no sign of chuffing, and i would assume that it would be tuned to about 45Hz which is approx the same as mine. to do that, you'd use 6" round ports and make the port tubes longer.

Thanks John - I’m curious if the long slot like wood port on the Barefaced Super Fifteen for example represents more port area than your new Starliner 215? What’s your guess/opinion?
