CWB 14: Whiskey and Beer

I see you like Star Trek. Me too. I was a fan of the re-boot with JJ Abrams "Star Trek". I actually always liked Star Trek over Star Wars. As a kid, I watched, and taped, most of the Star Trek re-runs. And I saw all the movies when they came out in the theaters.

I got misty at "I have been, and shall always be, your friend."

"District 9" was not too bad. I liked that one. But my real secret pleasure (Sci-Fi wise) are the Alien/Alien-Predator movies.

I've never ever seen a Star Wars movie. Not a single one. I saw the early trailers, and I saw it as a commercial endeavor. Then when they got into prequels, it was too far out there to be what I thought was a believable story line. It's sad I think that way, I know. But I prefer concept to commercial viability in my sci-fi.

That said - I haven't missed a single Star Trek movie. I've seen all the original series dozens of times, and I liked TNG. Wasn't such a fan of DS:9 or Voyager, though.

Abrams did Roddenberry's vision proud in this last movie, and I can't wait till the next one hits theaters. My favorite episodes....

* The Trouble with Tribbles
* Space Seed
* Mirror, Mirror


Secretly - I loved the Alien movies, too. :D And District 9. And I'm waiting for Orson Scott Card to be happy with animation and turn the Ender series into movies. He's refused to sell his movie rights and formed his own production company for just that reason.

Drummer, you have some wicked kits. I'd have to go with the DWs but I do like that Gretch set too.

This kit is a Mapex Saturn. Belongs to a drummer friend of mine, but I've had it set up for 2 years now. It has K's and Wuhans on it. Axis pedals. I plink on it and scare small animals when I crank back and give a rimshot on the porkpie little squealer.

My drummer in AOV still plays his GMS set he got in college but he has a Brady snare on it now. It's a ridiculous set. Sounds different than anything I've ever heard.

Mapex rarely gets the respect that it deserves... i've never played one of their mid or higher end kits that didn't sound great. I'm very lucky to have the gear that I do. The DWs and the vintage Gretsch kit are killer in what each can do. They are night and day in their sounds. Every drummer should be lucky enough to have one of each at their disposal.

So - I tried the music on the wall in my painting tonight and that plan is out. The wall is textured with sand in the paint. It took 3 coats to cover in the first place and I can't make a fine line to save my soul over all that texture. So...plan B....I have a friend hand-writing the musical scores that I liked and I'm going to frame them and intersperse the collection among the instrument hangers. The other walls will have framed albums, music posters, and autographed memorabilia.

This kit is nice enough, but I've been spoiled by some of the high-end Yamaha, Sonor, and GMS kits I've been lucky enough to play my bass with. My drummer in grad school had a little old Slingerland champagne colored jazz kit that was so focused and clear. Very surprising. This may hurt, but I bought an old ludwig kit from a garage sale in the mid 90s for $32. I traded the kit for a 75 Pbass but sold it because I am a Jbass guy. The cymbals were all super old Zildjans. The hats, big ride, a second ride with sizzles, and a few crashes. I traded them for two BagEnd 2x12 birch cabinets, two snow tires and a large Dominoes pizza :) Oh boy, the days of trading with no cash.... or as I used to call it, broke on broke crime.

I'm sure it was a mistake, but I loved those BagEnds for a long time.

Then it doesn't sound like a mistake to me.

Old Zildjians? Yup... they can be very cool. This pic was taken in 2008, about thirty-five cymbals ago before I owned any Sabians, K Customs or Constantinoples.

The cymbal at the top left of the bed is special. It is a 1940s 19" or so "K" ride, made in Istanbul. These often go for stupid money even with cracks in them. This one is absolutely perfect.

My very first "good" kit was a champagne sparkle 1965 Slingerland jazz kit.


And yes, drummers are weird...

Drummer, the cymbals from that Ludwig kit were 30's40's. The guy was in a swing/ big band way back and the kit was ancient. That's why it was probably a mistake ;). My friend at the music store gave me the BagEnds ( birch 2x12 pair) and we ate a pizza while my snows were getting put on ;). The foley of grad school
