LOL I was wondering how long it would be before someone mentions my avatar. Last Halloween I decided to sit in the garage with that silly viking helmet on and play bass and hand out candy. My oldest took that picture. I may or may not have made cover vids while wearing it :ninja:

There are a lot of discussions of P/J and reverse P/J configurations in the "Pickups" subforum of TB. Here's a current one that's fairly epic:

Come to think of it, I'm surprised we haven't heard from Furry Monkey yet about what a reverse P/J configuration "really" is ... :p

Um. Okay? How about we go back to that jazz part and someone draw me a picture? I know nothing about the whole electronics business of basses. If they have to be there and I get a high WP factor, then it's all good. Remember? LOL.

Yeah....I still don't get it - but that's okay. WP's abound and that's what's really important.

On the other hand - how about I just take more pictures of all my basses and post them up here and let you tell me what I have? LOLOL.

Off to the Sunday afternoon jam. Today we're adding Pretenders, Back on the Chain Gang. Someday, I'll sing. Today, not. At least, not while playing. I'm still far too clunky on the bassline, but getting there.

I never played one, but it always seemed to me that a reversed P pickup made more sense than a "normally" oriented P. That would give the D and G a little more "beef" and take some of the flab away from the E and the A, balancing out the tone a little better. That's probably heresy to a lot of Precision players, but I still think it kinda makes sense, at least on paper. And, I have to say, that Spector is sweet!

Here's a challenge to you CWB'ers - find a picture of a CWRPPB (Chick With a Reversed Precision Pickup Bass)! :D

A little derail here .... what model ESP is that? The *first* bass I ever bought was an LTD B-204, which I really liked in the store after comparing it to everything in that price range. But after about three weeks I was thinking stupid thoughts like "I'm not a 'metal head', why did I buy THIS?! I knew I should have gotten the Jazz instead ...". So I went back to the store and exchanged it for the Jazz I was looking at.

After playing, buying, selling, trading several basses over several years, I really started to regret not giving it a chance. I remember it being VERY easy to play, having a lot of tonal flexibility, looking really nice (a gorgeous natural finish), and also being pretty lightweight. I don't usually count it as my first because it didn't survive the return window, but over time I've learned the lesson I needed to learn and have since been rewarding it with that "first bass" distinction.

It's an ESP LTD B-55. I bought it for around $185 new last August to see if I would like 5'ers. It's light, has a fantastic neck, but tonally it never really made me happy. The J pickup on it is noisy as heck, though. I tried lowering the pickup into the body, adjusting the volume on it, all to no avail. I eventually just clipped the lead from that pickup to the preamp and voila, no more noise. I may try a different J pickup in the future.

Jam was pretty good today in my world. We've finally nailed three down solid between myself and the drummer and we've now added Back on the Chain Gang by The Pretenders. I must admit - I seriously underestimated the complexity of the bass on this little tune. Buried in that mix is a quite complex and lovely bass line. If ya'll don't see me by Wednesday, send someone out to the house to do a welfare check, okay? LOL

DT- digging your new avatar and the video playing in full viking raid party gear. That's awesome brother.

Drummer- so sorry for all your losses and sadness with your family. You and your family are on my mind quite a bit and I'm wishing you all the very best through these difficult times.

Tat- Bad ass bass and so cool that you are jamming in that trio. You guys look like you are having a blast and thats wonderful. Barefoot won't work for me but you are sporting it well :)

BassGen- congrats on the gig. I think I read that it was your first in a long time. SO glad you are back on the horse and having fun.

Furry- I've got a big old pair of steel toes ready to do battle with your tall boots :)

BSB and C3 hope you guys are doing well too.

So I walked into practice the other night ready to rehearse some covers and feeling a bit down that we had spent more time on covers than originals in the past few practices. I'm mostly into originals, but over time have come to appreciate a well executed cover or taking a familiar piece of music and transforming it into something a bit different.

Anyhoo... the guitarist said let's jam out on the changes to Summer Time but with a funk feel to warm up, and afterwards let's just do originals tonight! Man I was excited to hear that, especially since I was like the walking dead from running on 4-5 hours a night of sleep for the past couple weeks. I set up my little Tascam DR for a room mix and recorded the practice.

Here's the first tune we did for warming up. Sorry for the clams. We were just goofing because it was something to do to loosen up the hands and ears. After going through the tracks I thought it was kind of cool. Definitely not the Summer Time most would recognize :)

Signal for those who might wonder- Modulus VJ>Aggie DB750>Ampeg 410 pretty simple. The cab belongs to another guy that practices there with my drummer. Im not sure of the model but it does ok. Much prefer my BagEnds, but sure makes life easier to plug in my head and go.
Btw, the band is Aries Rising found on the scotjon website.

I try to match the bass line when there is something really "important" to the song but if I find something I like better I do that instead. I.e in "Bang A Gong" there isn't that much going on most of the time but I found a riff that I think grooves very well with the song so I play it. But I do (try to)make sure I get the two little solos right as they are very recognizable.
