Awesome!!!!:hyper::hyper::hyper:

So, if one was looking to try a fretless, do you think there is anything wrong with buying an inexpensive one? What would you recommend looking for?

Well I did mention that I played two different Squiers today. Both the same J bass but one with flatwound strings and the other with roundwounds. They were both $299 which I don't think is a lot. They both seemed OK but the one with the flats had a better set-up and lower action.

Sound seemed good but I didn't push them very hard in the store. I was playing through a SVT3-Pro and an Ampeg 410 cabinet.

But as always you should try before you buy.

Nothing wrong with it especially if you're looking to see if you like it. I haven't played this Squier fretless but it gets a lot of love and is in the 200-300 range:

Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass Fretless (Sunburst) | Sweetwater.com

It's a version of a fretless Fender Jazz, looks like it has a lot to like about it.

Not to complicate things, but you might want to try in a store unlined versus lined fretlesses (regardless of price) to see which types you prefer. That Squier is lined. I prefer unlined but (as you know) I play upright too. You might prefer lined.

Agreed with the above (great minds, etc.). IMO flats are better for fretless, a bunch of technical reasons why I think so but one practical one is that rounds will wear into a fretless neck (unlike a fretted neck), while flats won't.

That's the one I played today. It seemed pretty good but the machine heads were pretty crappy (They didn't turn nice like my other basses) and the bridge is of course a very cheap affair. I guess you could replace both those easy enough if you bought one and decided everything else was OK.

I wasn't as happy with the finish on the back of the neck. It's not a smooth finish. More of a matte finish so it didn't seem to slide as nice as moving around on any of my other basses.

that's why it's 200-300. Here's a Warwick at Guitar Center for 600-700, looks nice ... actually, don't tempt me!

hi all - so, per last night's post, I scored a good deal on a Genz Benz Streamliner 900 from a fellow TBer ... the deal went down in lower Manhattan tonight. Very nice guy and we actually got a bunch of bass lovers talking in this office lobby on Maiden Lane. Anyway, I've got it home in Brooklyn where my cabs are mainly for upright use ... so I put it on the kitchen counter and plugged in the Stingray 5 and a pair of headphones -

... nice. Can't wait to get it into action this weekend upstate.

I am seriously GASsing for a Stingray 5 right now. I've been molesting the SR5 that my GC has here for the last week or so. I'm saving for a used one..hopefully I will get one soon!!

Ahh...no problem. Have at the ready a bag with a paint gun & some candy apple red paint, portable sander, scrub brush, and some really nice smelling shampoo. Next time that bear comes around, you take her over to the creek, sit her down on the bank so her feet hang in the water and then wash them for her with the scrub brush and shampoo. (extra points if you do it all sexy, like look up at her and shoot her a hot smile and then massage her big ole' bear paws while you're washing) Then break out the sander and sculpt those wild claws into something a little more respectable and slightly less, um, deadly. When you're done with the sander (and maybe bring an extra battery or three) take the paint gun and work some CAR magic onto those claws. Voila. A sexy bear is a happy bear. She'll love the toes so much, she probably won't even try to put on your boots. :D (me, on the other hand, I'll stuff dish towels into the toes and clomp all around in them)

Someone tell me why the F I want to know what I'd look like covered in blue paisley patterned paint...and why I want to watch Lee give a bear a pedicure...:help:

Because you're twisted like that...and we like it. Oh, by the way - the 28 people I work with all had a good laugh about the bear pedicure and two of the ladies wanted to know if Lee was going to do a manicure, also. I laughed so hard when I read this that everyone came to see why - which is a really big deal since we had three bocce tournaments going among the team, and a bar tab riding on the Cincinnati/UConn game. There was also talk of a bet on whether or not sexy bear would let Lee ever leave the creek after he was done with her feet.

BTW - you'd look awesome in blue paisley body paint.

I have had 2 laklands, still have this one. On the fence on it as it is not getting much playing time. OTOH, the market is crappy right now as well. It's pretty nice but herd thinning is
the order of the day though I have been avoiding it. I fixed it up with GHS Boomers (rounds) and it kicks bootay. Bartolini's
(not ChiSonics).

She's lovely, Thor. HB?

Yeah, that's what got me thinking about it. :p

lol... He should probably do a mani too, cuz, well, I know where my claws would be if I got that kind of treatment. :p That being said, I doubt Sexy Bear would let him leave the creek. :p

I was thinking I could totally rock a Smurfette outfit and some blue body paint. :D

I like flats better in general anyway. The XXX just got a new set of tapewounds, but both of the Ibanez have flats.

I'd probably need the lines, although, the one fretless I did play didn't have them, so maybe not. I prefer the look of the unlined ones. :p
