Theres a tried and proven method of earning your children's respect and its not being their best friend. People seem to thing they can do things a "new" way when its been a certain way for thousands of years.

By all means parents, teach your kids to do exactly what your say when you say it, to be obedience machines. But when they run with the wrong crowd and do stupid **** because their friends tell them to, or buy whatever new terrible music is most popular, don't think "Why is my kid so stupid". Know that you made them that way, you taught them to follow orders, do what they are told, to respect any authority no matter how questionable it may seem, and to be followers, not leaders.

You don't need to be their best friend, you need to be their parent. To me that doesn't mean "Do as I say, live your life the way I tell you, or else you'll get a belt across your backside". To me it means teaching your kids to think for themselves, to make decision and accept the consequences. Teaching your kids to live their own life in a responsible manner, the way they want to.

So let her walk all over them until she moves out?

No, if it comes to that give her an choice. Pull your finger out, or get out. She posted something stupid on facebook, sit down with her, explain to her how and why she shouldn't do so, how it hurt you seeing that post, and why she has to do chores. Tell her how hard life was when your were a kid etc. etc., but do it in person, where you can actually talk, as well as listen.

I dont think my dad was an ******* for publicly humiliating me when I was a real ass.

Did your dad behave like a 12 year old while he was doing so? Was he idiotic enough to film it for the whole world to see?

I just saw the video - I won't be a bit surprised if this guy's daughter turns into a runaway.

All the stuff he spouts about how hard he had it as a kid is irrelevant. She is not him, the world isn't the same, I don't care and she surely doesn't care.

All he needed to do was have a sincere talk with his daughter and take the laptop. IMO he's grandstanding and taking a very hazardous path. This is the kind of approach that destroys relationships between parents and kids.

As the father of two, I don't approve of the way he went about this...and I doubt it was very productive. It was a stereotype of redneck discipline.

People are not born with knowledge of the consequences of new technology. Especially when there used to the OLD ways. All this facebook/youtube is relatively new and people are SLOWLY learning the consequences of it. Cyberbulling, and committing suicide because of the internet is all new.

I highly doubt he though more than just a few of her friends would see it.

You are teaching them every single day to respect power and authority and do what they are told, simply because they are told to do it. This does not encourage independent thinking.

Simply telling a kid not to do something "Because I say so" is not healthy in my opinion. Explain to them why they shouldn't do it, and they will take that knowledge and reasoning with them for the rest of their life.

I respect my parents authority, rules and decisions because I see how hard they work. They don't need to tell me. Respect comes from the fact that they deserve it, not because they beat it into me as a child. Respect and fear are two very different things, despite what some seem to believe.

Discharging a firearm in a public place is a federal offence in Australia, and it's also a good way to have the scrutiny of child services, especially if you video yourself doing it and post it on the internet. If you get caught discharging a firearm in public, your licence and firearms get scrutinized heavily by authorities and my guess is that in 9 out of 10 cases, gun licences and firearms get taken away and you get a heavy fine/jail time, all depending on the judge, severity of the offence etc.

The laws pertaining to gun ownership and use are VERY tight here, it's probably why we don't have so many people killed per year by gun violence in comparison to the USA.

The guy works in IT, dresses up like Chuck Norris, shoots at an inanimate object with the obligatory b-movie "tough-guy" line and films himself while doing so; all because his teenaged daughter had a little moan to her friends about doing the housework. Talk about descending to a level.

I don't think the daughter is the only "self-absorbed" one in that household.

"A little moan"? According the guy on the video, she CUSSED OUT her parents on Facebook. I think what he did was awesome!
