+1 a flavor thats works so often...sometimes I lean for 'ray, 'bird or atk - but so often P (like garlic, onion and ginger) get it done

I have the Squier Matt Freeman P. Thinking about adding a Fender to the collection. I was looking into Modern Basses because I don't really have one in my collection but the simplicity of the P, the tone that will cut through a brick wall, etc.....I kind of want another.

those MF and CV Squier Ps are very nice basses imho - when you consider the $..they are silly good. The post '10 MIM Standards are fantastic (imho) but..I wouldn't stress over a CV Squier vs MIM Fender on Headstock alone. I would say go Classic Series MIM, RW MIM or MIA as a full-on upgrade from your MF. That being said, wtfdik? Also a P with Flats and a P with Rounds does cover a tone of ground (imho etc)

I bought a 50'classic p the very first year (I think) that they came out. Many other basses (about 20) have come and gone since it bought it 8 years ago. It's probably the longest I've ever owned an instrument! You can't go wrong with a good P!

+1 - just got my MIM Classic Series 50s P back after a couple years (was left with a friend in Korea after a gig..thread to follow) and WOW as good as I remembered it (and I would have gone on and on about it being the best value P bass available and just a fantastic bass in general as well as all you would want in a vintage style bass for a killer price) this bass has blown me away again. It sat there for two years....was covered in dust and what not...cleaned it up..played a few notes....hmm..seems darn close to in tune (other than the E it was still in tune..the E was out a hair as I bumped it while cleaning) and the set up was as I left it. Stable neck! (wears EB Group 1 55-110 flats) Love that series!

How'z 'bout letting the OP decide what kind of strings HE likes? My '65 SINGS with steel rounds on it. Envy me!!!

+1! I love flats - but hey - to all their own - nice to have one of each...or also a ray, a bird, etc etc

Gonna have to agree with this. Still sounds like a P, just way more beastly.

QPs are super..stock PUs can be great too...I remember loving the '2' P PU from Duncan - P Bass 'Hot' maybe? I would always vote for playing it stock prior to planning any swaps...(all that ymmv, imho)

From the "Unwritten Rules of P-bassdom thread:

1. P-Basses ALWAYS "sit better in the mix"
2. Volume and Tone are all anyone should ever need
3. Wear = Mojo
4. "Pretty P's" (like my Select) aren't acceptable ...ha ha ha
5. Leo "got it right" the first time
6. They are built like tanks. This is evident when you have to throw one at a keyboard player with a heavy left hand.
7. For best results, use flats.
8. Jamerson used one. The billions of folks who bought Motown records can't be wrong.

Nice! I'd rock that if I was getting a P. That looks like a Jeff Babicz bridge from the picture, I know you said it's a Leo Quan, either way it's a nice upgrade, if it's a Babicz I love 'em, put them on the couple Js I have.

Yes, it is a Babicz bridge.
Didn't notice it until I went to pick it up.
And for all those string suggestions, I actually put on a set of GHS black tapewounds. Got them in the mail by mistake yesterday.
Sometimes mistakes turn out to be good, though, because this bass really thumps now.

I WISH i could get into 4 strings, but i m so used to having that B, id be lost (and miserable) on a 4. So hard to find 5 strings in SA even more so for leftys!
