My home board is set so this is going on the gig board. I spent last night shooting it out with the DCX Bass. I concluded I love both pedals and don't have a preference at this point. They have different voices and some unique features (contoured blend + boost versus adaptive voicing), but both are excellent. What surprised me the most is how different the MBD's clipping voice is from the MDB-2's. I like the MBD much more. The MBD-2 could sound like IC clipping at higher gain, but I don't get that with the MBD. It stays MOSFET. I only played with it for an hour or so last night, though, so these are just first impressions.

I have both the DCX and now the MBD on my board… each definitely have a place in my tone.

How was the "Fixed; Not Fixed" switcher? That thing is high on my NEED list.

I think Dave might still have a prototype blender with him, it has a footswitch to take the blender out and put it back in, essentially doing the same thing as the fixed/not fixed pedal. Don’t tell him I told you though

The BSRI Ashmaker was my first dirt pedal with a bost, and I’ve gotta say that I like that feature on the MBD.

I flipped the Ashmaker, mostly because I didn’t use it as often as I thought I would. The Ashmaker was an interesting bridge between a modern Darkglass sound and a more conventional distortion sound. The mid EQ boost/cut on it allowed for more radical tone shaping than the MBD tilt EQ. You could get a scooped bedroom Tone out of the Ashmaker or make it really cut in the mids, which actually made the distortion sound “cleaner” in some ways. I think the MBD blend and depth controls allow for more “useful” sound design if you want to retain the big clean lows. I found that with the Ashmaker I always wanted the boost engaged to get the sounds I liked, even if it was at low gain settings.

I need more time with the MBD, which will happen once my back pain gets to a point where I can play bass again. I’m making progress on that, so hopefully sooner than later.

Yeah. It didn't last long, maybe another minute after I posted. I got the one before it. I got an email from Reverb as I had followed the initial "local pickup only" listing. I just happened to be sitting at my computer in time to see it and grab one.

No... I had a Rusty Box for a minute (cool pedal) and the DCX sounds more polished; like a classic studio recording console. The DCX thickens, where the Rusty Box sharpens.
