Darkglass Microtubes 900 Class D Amp

So I am back to the drawing board on a cab. The clean sound of the M900 sounds utterly amazing through the Audiokinesis Thunderchild 212, but unfortunately the Microtubes channels are less than stellar, mainly do to not being able to attenuate the horn more I presume. Needless to say, I didn't buy the DG amp just for its phenomenal clean tone. What cabs are you using yours with? Feel free to share pics so I don't have to wade through this entire post for the (I lost count) time...

Shameless self promotion: Hit me up if anyone wants a killer Thunderchild cab.

I apologize if this was addressed later as I haven't read through all the thread yet &/or if you already tried this, but have you tried the switches on the back of the TC212?
One switch is Smooth or Agressive for upper mids & the other is Flat HF or Rolled-off HF.
If you set it for Smooth & Rolled-off that should help with taming that freq range a bit.
If you want a tubier tone, don't be afraid to experiment with the port plugs as well.
If you knew all this already - my bad; if you don't know which switch position is which, talk to Duke.

Really enjoyed my Ric 4003 into the DSM OminCabSimDeluxe into the MT900 on VMT mode, tonight. I hate to say it, but I could live with just that gear and cover a ton of ground. I'm not getting rid of my Dunwich pedals yet, but I could head out for a jam without them and still feel pretty good about my sound. Color me impressed with this amp.

And the more you spend time with it, the more you will realize how incredibly versatile it is regardless of your style of music. It's pretty easy to dial up just about any tone.

(X-post from the Barefaced thread)
Jammed with the 900 for the first time, tonight.
Ric 4003 > Darkglass 900 > BB2
Pretty impressive.
Darn loud.
Beefy but not boomy. To be fair, the Ric isn't sporting the biggest low-end in town.
VMT channel worked really well for our indi-rock 3 piece sound.
Cab barely broke a sweat, and I think the head had lots of watts it didn't bother to use.
I gimped my way through a few minutes on drums, while my buddy played the bass, and it sounded really nice and clear, even with some hefty distortion.

Hi! The 2 Ohm switch simply limits the maximum power output to 900W when using a 2 Ohm load (which is why you can use for lower power output with higher impedance cabs).

Regards!

Hi all,

Any advice regarding which Barefaced cab to pair with the M900 ? I’m in the UK btw.

I currently have Bagend 12’s (212 & 112) but really want something lighter for a ‘one trip’ solution ... Super Compact or TWO10 ?

Alex from Barefaced recommended a Super Twin but my current budget only stretches to a used SC but I’m more drawn towards the TWO10 for some reason ... thanks in advance guys :) .. I’ll also post this on Barefaced thread if you don’t mind.

@sifi2112 hi mate

I am in the UK as well.

Ignore Alex at you peril.

I spoke to him and I have a Supertwin and have used it with my DG head before I moved it on for something else. It’s killer mate.
It is a one hand one trip cab at only 16-17kg, it is everything you want it to be.

Only reason (well not only) for the 10s is if you need the coloration and voicing of the cab.

Sell the bergs, add the money to what you may have, you will have a Supertwin!

So I have read this entire thread as well as a few others plus seen countless YouTube videos and I am really digging the distortion and compression this amp puts out. I mean really digging it. However I have also seen the posts about noise coming from the amp. I don't really care about fan noise, but hum or white noise is a problem for me.

I used to own a GK MB500 which I considered quite noisy. During the gig it was no problem, but practicing or setting up for sound check did annoy me. Needless to say, the MB500 is now gone and replaced with a GK 700rb II which is much quieter. So my question is just how noisy would you all say this amp is?

Mine is really rather quiet. I’d say I only get fan noise and that isn’t noticeable once playing. No hum or white noise from mine. It may just be a random fault in some builds. I’d say to play it first to find out.
Agreed. I have never noticed excessive amp noise from having several of these come through our store. However, the pres are capable of noise if parameters are jacked up.

This. Hard to say how noisy the amp is without knowing the settings someone will set it at. The cab being used will also be a factor. If the amp generates noise at 6k, but your cab rolls off at 4k, then you'll never hear the noise.
My impression is that there's more noise than with my Demeter VTBP 800 head, but not wild or unreasonable static or hiss.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I understand it all depends on settings, but you can always use other amps as a reference point.

That's why I mentioned the MB500 which I found quite noisy as compared to my TCE, Genz Benz, Ashdown and GK 700rb II. Heck even the Acoustic B600HD is quiet.

We'll I will definitely be finding out for myself as I have decided 100% that this will be my Christmas present to myself.

I had originally thought about the Magellan 800 but I can't stop watching the YouTube videos on this amp. :bassist:

I've been able to play through the M900 for a few hours and it's an impressive amp. Really smart design in being versatile but very user friendly. You can dial in a good tone off the clean channel or dirty in seconds but still have plenty of ways to tweak the tone further. It responds to different basses quite dramatically. At first this was frustrating me but then I realized "hey dummy, the amp is versatile and not wholly imposing it's tone on the overall sound. That's a good thing". Then I started dialing the amp in with different basses and again this is pretty easy to do. I do find in general it sounds best with my active basses, definitely shines with a Spector bass so +1 to that list of a few of you here who have found the same. Really dig it with a Stingray too. From there I got the best results with brighter/hotter passive basses (P bass with EMG geezer sounds great, Lakland Glaub with fairly bright Fralin, P bass with Dimarzio Model P, etc.).

Unlike a lot of class D amps I've tried, the M900 does not have the "hollow" or "airy" mids feeling, it sounds to my ears closer to a class a/b amp. Yes, I know there are arguments about how class d does not sound different from class a/b and such but save those arguments for elsewhere. In my opinion, the M900 responds better than many other class d amps on the market in this respect. It sounds fuller to my ears.

The amp takes other dirt pedals really well and I was enjoying setting the drive channel on the amp to mild-medium grit and then pushing it harder with other drive pedals. Of course the A/O works well with the amp, but my fave so far with it is the Tech 21 GT2. The dear to my heart Brimstone XD2 also sounds excellent with the amp (no surprise there). I haven't started with fuzz pedals into it yet, that's coming up. Anyone have a favorite fuzz they're running into the M900 with good results?

I'm not one for "lighter is better" thinking when it comes to amps. I'll haul a heavier amp if it delivers the tone I want, but of course the M900 being lightweight is a pleasant bonus. I've not taken it to a gig but I imagine it's a nice amp to travel with for sure.

There are so many posts on TB from players wanting one drive pedal to pep up their rock tones, I think this amp would be very satisfying to that sect of players wanting to keep their rig simple and portable but be able to have both clean and dirty tones (I'm more the "turn on the dirt and never turn it off again" tone chaser).

Factor in the price and it's a lot of bang for the buck. I've got a mountain of amps I love and in some cases have been using for years but if I was starting out I'd say the M900 would be a great first (or only) choice. It's rich with the words ending in Y; portability, affordability, versatility, user friendly, bad ass-ability, etc.
Anyone using a B*K or VMT pedal into a similar sized/wattage class d amp should at least do yourself the favor of test driving the M900.
