Dating.
Honestly, I've noticed over the years, the game alternates between women wanting a pickup line to date vs women wanting a guy who will make no effort to pickup, only to have a "normal conversation". This happens over the course of a few years.
The other idea is that if you "cover the area" enough (as in sending out 10 or however many emails a night) you'll land someone. I found this was a waste of time. For one, my area is just not very rich in prospects for dating. Two, they already see you coming when 300 other guys seek them out in a variety of bad messages.
Lately my pickup line is "so how long have you been in ______ (insert profession listed)?"
Lately it's worked.
Ladies REAL LIKE a guy to listen to them. OR at least fake it good. But really, if you listen you can often figure out quickly if they are a keeper or strictly catch & release. Gal I dated before I found #3 here - great "personality", nutty as a jaybird. Just had to give her a little wine and let her talk.
Be practical brother - find out if she is already financially self-supporting herself.

Nope. I'm single and never even considered checking it out even just for a look. Guess I'm too happy being alone.
I found my wife on one. been together 6 years, and married for 2. A dating site is no worse than picking up girls at the bar or going out on numerous dates to find the right person.
I find the medium a bit awkward. In my experience, after dinner concludes, and you realize there's not much connection there, it generally ends as a 1 night stand.
I always thought it was cheesy. The girl I'm dating now I met through a site and things are going swimmingly, firing on all cylinders. It was just a lucky happenstance. I went into the online casino, pulled the lever, and all the fruit lined up. 
I don't think it happens a lot, but it does happen. I think what edpal said about being clear in your profile about what you want has a lot to do with it if you're using this medium as well.
