Dean Club!!!

I managed to lower em. Tweaked the neck to h
Who lowered the strings for you? I’d definitely try lowering the pups. Is the bass noticeably lowder than it used to be? Try having both vol controls matched to see if the hum goes away. If it didn’t hum before it really shouldn’t hum now

I figured it out .. Had nothing to do with the lowering of my action, neck pick up was going out. Well.. Went out.. Always had some issues with my input jack being janky, due to a shoddy soldering job. Finally got a soldering kit to fix it.. Now my pup goes poof. Don't know if I have the money to buy new pups and have a professional replace em or try to fix it myself.

So, last evening I was surfing and went on 'No Treble' to check out one of 'Arianne Cap's bass lessons and as I was trying to figure out her two octave triad lesson I noticed the bass she was playing was really nice. Upon further inspection the headstock shape looked like DEAN. See picture below.

The headstock is definitely the DEAN Headstock shape from Edge Series and a few others, but these are not DEAN basses. I figured out from watching other youtube vids of Ari Cap's lessons that these are Marleaux basses.
Never heard of them before. Kind of miffed they stole DEAN's headstock shape. Ever hear or see these before?
Apparently they are German?

Yeah I noticed that too, David Pastorius (Jaco's nephew) is endorsed by Marleaux, which is where I first heard of them. I guess tbf there are only so many ways you can design a headstock.

Well, they are EMG pups, if I recall correctly, so they're readily available (should be). EMG is also very helpful with getting answers from their website. EMG is one of few pup manufacturer's that actually makes active pups. The EMG HZ's are passive, but their other pups are active. To avoid having issues with doing this yourself, just make sure the pups are the same size. It would be wise to replace both rather than just one. Since your Edge is a passive bass doing this yourself shouldn't be that bad. Take pix of existing wire connections to the V/V/T pots so you can easily figure out what goes where after you disconnect the existing pups.

True. I was more surprised than anything. They look like really nice basses.

So I've been thinking of getting a 5 string Dean to replace my 4 string until I can decide on what pup upgrades I should get for it. Looking for a preferably used dean in the 200ish range. Any suggestions?

I'd say the lowest cost 5 stringer Dean is an older Edge 1 5 stringer, but it will be passive. Giving up on the older 4 stringer or just in limbo 'til you get replacement pups?

There are 5 string versions of the Edge 2 and Edge 3. Both of these have open pole MM style pups with the E2 having V/V/B/T and the E3 having V/V/B/M/T

The Edge 5 is basically an Edge 4 in a 5 string version that is active with V/V/B/T. Older ones have EMGHZ' and newer ones have DMT pups.

I like my Edge Pro which is a 4 string, but they make a 5 string version as well, but you'll be hard pressed to find it at $200.

Reverb probably won't have one for that low a price, but sometimes you can get lucky with the 'make an offer' option. Try Merry Go Round and GC used bass....sometimes you'll see one here on the TB classified too!

Almost forgot...for something different the Rhapsody also came in a 5 string version with EMG HZ's and V/V/B/M/T.

Good day, and thanks for the invite to the Dean Club B-Mac! I do still have my Cabbie and would love to be part of this group. My story.. I bought my Cabbie off EBay about 3 years ago. I was getting very comfortable with 32" scale Basses, and hollow bodies. The 2 octave neck appealed to me, so I got it. At first, I wasn't happy with it. As you can see, it has TV Jones Thunder'Trons in it (like my G5123B's), with push pull pots to single coil the PUP's. I still wasn't happy, so I sold it to my kid, who also plays. He raved, and I listened. A year later I got it back, and spent some quality time working things out. Now it goes to, and is played at every gig for at least a third of the night.

About the pic.. I wear sunglasses because my eyes are closed 50% of the time, and I sit on a stool because we are a 7-8 piece band with Go-Go Dancers, and the key player is on the other side of the stage. There are enough peeps standing, and I'm getting old ;-) I'm playing through a couple EV 1X18 full range cabs, you can see my glasses case and water. If you look close, you can see the green of a Trace Elliot Elf driving those 18's.

Just wanted to say the Dean Club Number displayed in your signature looks mighty fine!

Just in limbo until I can replace the pups on the older Dean. I'll look into one of the older Dean Edge 01s. I actually prefer passive pick ups just out of sheer simplicity.

Hmmm.. I should honestly just get a stinkin' P Bass.. Haha

Not for $200, unless it's a Squire. Sub-Frequency has a very nice Dean Paramount. Dean 5 String Edge Bass Guitar | Gold Rush Guitars You might want to get some feedback from him or check out his posts here a few pages back.

I have a very nice Fender American Deluxe 2014 P-Bass. It is a very nice alder or ash (I can't recall) gloss natural finish. Since it is an American Deluxe it is actually a P-J style that has the P-Bass pups and one J-Bass pup at the bridge. 18 volt active and can also be turned off for passive sound. I really like it. I got lucky with a very good price. But I like my Deans too, sometimes even more.

Here's an older Dean Edge 5 (ended)
Dean Club!!!

And this really nice example of a newer Edge 5
Dean Club!!!

I left out the Edge 09 5 stringer as it is one pup and passive.

I didn't realize Dean made a P Bass. I'm going to have to look into it more. Maybe save up, work a little more OT to get myself one. They look fantastic!

Looking at a used "Excellent" condition one on GC for 350$. Not bad considering they are 500$ new. They match up well with a MIM Fender P?

Here is a NBD review of one from another TB-er
NBD : Dean Paramount
I'd suggest reaching out to him to get more info as I have never played one and don't want to steer you wrong.

If your 5 string G.A.S. overtakes the P-Bass G.A.S. I recommend you check this out.
Dean Club!!!
This is one of the Czech made Deans and they are really sweet. I have some info on them somewhere and a club member here I believe owns 3 of them. GC has this listed as an Edge 5. It isn't...it is an Edge Improv 5. If this were a 4 string I'd jump on it like white on rice or stink on #$%@

Bradworld has a few of these in 4 string versions. Dean Club!!!
I haven't seen him here and from his profile it doesn't look like he visits TB any longer. He'd be a good resource for opinions on this bass.

I think my G.A.S syndrome is just going to be collecting Dean basses of any type. 4 or 5 string. Like Bradworld, beautiful collection of unique Dean basses. I let my bad time (inexperience on my part of how to properly take care of an instrument) with my Edge 01 make me way too cautious of other dean basses. My ultimate goal is to have a Fender P, Fender J and a stable of Dean basses.

I know I'm replying to myself, but I know Dean uses a lot of soapbar style pick ups... I've only ever had this one bass with a soapbar in it. It sounded amazing but I don't know enough about others to really compare. Can these style pups be as versatile as say.. A jazz bass? Can they be booming like a P? Sorry to ask questions but I really want to know as much as I can about it.

IMO it really depends on what genre of music you're interested in playing. I don't consider the J-Bass or the P-Bass to be all that 'versatile'. They both have a certain sound. I like them both. They are 'versatile' within a certain range. Some of my fav bass heroes play them....like John Wetton on P-Bass when he was in King Crimson or of course Geddy Lee on J-Bass in Rush...granted these are very limited examples. The soap bar or more specifically the EMG like yours, when coupled with an actual EMG preamp are quite amazing and other EMG pups are even more amazing. The ones you have in your old Dean bass are passive EMG pups. Many manufacturers make soap bar style pups. Even Bartolini makes them.
I have 37 basses varying from solid body to hollow/semi-hollow to ABG's with varying kinds of pups and they all sound different, so it really depends on what your looking for. The J-Bass is typically that growl with crunch and bottom, more so than a Ric....that's why GL switched from his Ric to a J....similar top end crunch but more bottom.
I don't have any Music Man basses whether pre-Ernie Ball or not, but I do have basses that have MM style exposed pole pups and they sound different too.....so does the mudbucker on my SG. I have a bass that has an SG style mudbucker that has a coil split switch that makes it sound entirely different. One of the great things about EMG pups is that they are one of the few companies that actually makes active pups. You'll see a lot of basses labeled as active, but the pre-amp is active, not the pups. When you have an active pre-amp and real active pups like EMG's other than the HZ's you have you can get a really huge range. Plus there are pups like the lipstick pups on Danelectros and Kays that I have never heard which are supposed to have another different sound.
