Dean Club!!!

I don't think so... I thought this was normal for that model. Generic tuners meaning "non-Schaller", like on the Improv/ early European Select, and EMG-Hz's, which I believe are stock. Apparently, there's yet another discrepancy with what Dean put on promo stuff and what they put on the headstock. I highly doubt anyone at GC would know this is a ECS, unless it specifically said it on the bass. According to Dean's promo material, it's an Edge Custom 5.

I asked that question as a czech jeff berlin bass i’ve been eyeing is for sale on GC used bass link. I called about it and it has the Barts and Schaller tuners but the BA II Bridge has been replaced with a Wilkinson bridge.

I also picked up a Sledgehammer 4 string that had no name tuners instead of Grovers like it is supposed to have.

Just wondered if this might be a trend?

Sometimes they know they have something special and other times they have no clue.

That's the fluorescent Yellow Zone you bought not too long ago, right? How are you liking it?
It is a nice player. No fret issues sharp or buzzing and no dead spots. The action was at 6/64 and the neck relieve was great right out of the box. The pickups are strong and the tone of the bass is awesome, so I have no reason to change them. The neck is painted maple and fast. This is only the second gig but it held up well and stayed in tune once I tune it. So I couldn't be happier with it. RTS there are a couple more videos of it on the humor section gig reports before and after :)

@NicJim:
I was talking in theoreticals, mostly. Generalizations. Every sentence I could start with "all other things being equal, yada yada". So, all other things being equal, it does not make too much sense boosting the signal twice (active pickup PLUS active preamp). But if pickup B is a million times better than pickup A --AND happens to be active, I'd use it over A with or without active preamp. So that's an example of all things NOT being equal. As for active pickups using 25K pots versus 500K, that makes sense in the sense that the output of an active circuit is usually much lower impedance than a passive pickup, and so it doesn't hurt to use lower impedance potentiometers; but lower output impedance does not force you to lower the resistance value of the potentiometers; it merely allows it. You could leave the original, 500K pots and use active pickups with them.
Another thing I forgot to mention, now speaking of impedance, is that an "active circuit" does not necessarily denote that the signal must be amplified in voltage. You can have an "amplifier" of a gain of 1 --a.k.a. "a voltage follower", that merely takes a high impedance source and mirrors the voltage at the output but at a much lower impedance. It is possible, though not likely, that active pickups could be active only in the sense of having active electronics to present a low impedance output. I would do it, if I was an instrument manufacturer, to lower noise sensitivity in the wires between the pickups and the active preamp. But then again, I'm a clinically compulsive perfectionist.

Yes, EMG pickups. The numbers designate size, and number of strings.... 35 is 3.5", 4 string, 40 is 4", 5 string, 45 is 4.5", 6 string. The CS and DC pickups are both dual coil, but the CS sounds a bit warmer than the DC.

The SNC preamp is a clone of the HAZ preamp that is most famously used in Spector basses. It gives them their unique aggressive tone, along with the EMG's. They're built by a fellow member here on Talkbass, and cost about half (or less) than an actual HAZ.
So, does the SNC preamp also plug in like the EMG preamp does with the EMG pups or do you need to solder?

It's now official. I took the GHS Pressurewound Flats off of my AEB, and put on GHS Pressurewound Bronze strings.

My first impression was, they're not as "bright" as I thought they would be. Since they look like bronze acoustic guitar strings, I was expecting more of that type of sound. They were a little brighter than the strings I had on it. What I'm really liking about them is how they feel. They're like beautiful butter. No initial stickiness or tack. Just smoothness.

I'll use it at church on the 29th, so I'll have a live report after that.

My live report is in. They sounded good. No issues. I definitely recommend them if you want a brighter flat.

Anyone have a Brian Bromberg sig. Dean? I missed one a couple years ago been curious about them...
I don’t think anyone who has been here recently has or had one. I know there was a discussion on TB somewhere about three different manufacturers making the BB Bass though and how they compared

I did have a couple a few years ago, a 4 and a 5. I liked both, very nicely Korean-built. Not heavy. Great sounding basses with the peizo bridge. The ergos were a bit eclectic for my tastes, but may be perfect for others. I recall reading that some owners upgraded the pickups to Barts and claimed a major tone improvement.

The Dean B2 has an Achilles Heel, though. The pointy headstock looks cool but is kinda vulnerable to impact damage. Here's what happened to both of mine during shipping. The fiver here, searching for my pics of the four banger busted headstock.

I think I remember seeing that somewhere. Amber brownish with a piece of the point gone from the headstock? Real shame. One of the coolest looking Deans. I like the Razor Neck Thru and some of the Euro spec deans too.

Yeah it was like $349 on the bay... I've only ever played an AEB Dean but I really remember wanting that Bromberg... lol
