Demeter Minnie 800D Question

Wow digital signal processing and a looping function!:hyper:

Actually the picture I posted is just the interface control. Below is a more detailed shot of the amp

If it really is that simple, then why does Jule bother working with Jim Demeter - he could just buy the power module and embed it in Monique himself. As with most things, it's not likely that simple...

Jim

Yeah, it isn't that simple. This becomes clear when you compare amps using the same ICE module (for example, the Aguilar TH350, the GK MB500 and the Shuttle 6.2). Of course, much of the difference is the preamp, but the power management and additional circuitry makes the absolute performance of these amps quite different when pushed.

Is the little Demeter worth $999... who knows. My guess is, there is some pretty cool circuitry in there regarding limiting and also the interface to the preamp.

+1 It's not. In fact, we see wildly varying results in our bench testing of amps which use the same ICEPower modules. How the designer/manufacturer handles things such as the power supply, line filtering, thermal management, and limiting make a very meaningful difference in the real-world performance.

Corresponded a bit with Demeter through email. The Volume knob on the Minnie controls power amp output. There is a trim pot inside the Minnie for adjust input gain. That is frustrating, but I understand the desire to keep the outside simple.

I'm really thinking about ordering one of these soon.

Jason, did they give you any info on special things they've done with the amp itself, like limiting or filters?

I've been looking for a small form factor power amp and I'd be pretty confident that since it's a Demeter product, it's going to be solid. BUT man, that price tag! I have to try and justify the $1000 cost. $799 would be easier to justify, but $999, not so easy! Must be that $1000 threshhold!

That's good info nostatic.
I emailed Demeter regarding matching pre's to the amp. I got a response back saying that the amp can match up well with most pre's, for example, the Tonehammer Pedal, given its adjustable sensitivity. I have another email in to Demeter with some followup questions about filtering, limiting, etc. I said that I don't want them to divulge anything proprietary though.

I didn't ask them about such things, as I would not expect to get any detail back that would tell me much. He said that you need to get 1 full watt into the input section to drive the power amp to full capacity, but that the input trim would allow up to 6dB of gain boost. I'm sure that it would work well with the TH or VT pedals.

It seems like a very cool idea for someone like me who uses these types of pedal 99% of the time because I do in-ears, and then find myself wanting to use those same pedals on regular gigs because I'm so accustomed to them. As much as I love my RH750, I've been using either the VT or the TH pedal into the FX loop when I use my rig. The RH750 works great when going through it's own preamp, but the mojo (perhaps it's the APM) doesn't give it that same luster when bypassing it. I'm thinking a solid 500 watts at 4 ohms as with the Minnie through the Baer ML112 would make my preamp pedals sound fantastic.

Same here. I asked about limiting and such, but added that I didn't want them to divulge anything proprietary about the amp.
I use my TH in the studio, and I love my Ampeg PF350, but I'd like to have the option of being able to run the TH as the pre on a gig as well. I suppose technically I could run the TH into the effects return of an amp, but you're never quite sure how much coloration from the amp is going on there.

Right. With my rh750, it seems there is some extra stuff happening after the FX return that isn't quite what I'm after when using a preamp pedal. As a total package, the rh750 is killer though.

I think that's why I'm so curious. If the heat abatement, limiter, and other such things are implemented well, it could be a bargain especially since there is little competition out there. It's just hard to know. I supposed I could try calling Demeter (never have done that before) to see what they can tell me on the phone. I'd prefer if they just posted up a user manual and some simple specs on the website first before I decide to go much deeper. I'm seldom in the mood this last year or two to buy and try.

You should feel free to call and ask directly. I've known James Demeter for a long time, and I can tell you he still cares about the music and the players.

He (or one of his folk) will give you straight up answers.

I believe that tweaks with the filtering are a big part of it. Monique has a very low noise floor and James/Jules were aiming to keep that really low. fwiw, my Puma, which is a great head, has more noise than the Monique/Minnie setup.

How is the feel of the amp compared to other heads you've tried, with regards to ambiguous terms like quickness, punch, authority, clamping, etc?
