The guy is good. Did he invent the technique? No. Is he better at it than most. Yes. Love it or hate it I would like to see some vids of better. lets see em. I am guessing he could probably knock out a mean Mustang Sally if you asked him too.

Well, we were asked to comment about this particular work and not his whole oeuvre. Put me in the pointless wankery camp. I'm too old to care about chops. My pappy always wanted to be a musician and when I took up the drums, he said to me endlessly, "Any monkey can be taught to play fast. Now, playing really slowly and well, that's hard." Everything that I find wrong with this clip is also what I find wrong with "tech-death" metal. So pointing out his "successful"* tech-death metal albums does little to help me elucidate me on the value of his choperificness.

*I've seen this kind of successful before. It means they share motel rooms instead of couch surfing and taking turns sleeping in the van. It means that they and three other bands of the ilk can fill a ballroom sized hall. Where and when I come from, being really successful meant selling out 4 nights in a 14,000 seat basketball arena in a day without the help of the internet. Now get off my lawn!

Probably. Room for lots of flavors. i believe the old school is a bit put off by that which they cannot do. i know lots of guitarists that freaked out after hearing Al Dimeola the first time. They thought Hendrix was the end all of guitar. He might be.....But he could never play as fast and clean as the Jazz shredders...

Only on TB do people assume that a guy showing off chops in a solo YouTube video can't do anything else or that they can't get any gigs etc.

I didn't enjoy that video much but the guy has skills and technique. Just because that example isn't musical doesn't mean he's incapable of playing musically.

I spent a lot of time learning to double thumb, mostly to be able to play a couple Marcus Miller tunes. Even after I got pretty good with the technique it wasn't much to listen to. Mostly me practicing scales and string crosses faster and faster. Good technique, but not musical. To be fair I never posted it to YouTube, but anyway. . .

Using it to play "Power" IS musical. But I'll probably never play that at a gig either. We should all work on technique and challenge ourselves even if what we get hired for is to lay down the foundation.

But then I guess YouTube videos of a bass player by himself practicing a steady 8th note pop groove don't get a bunch of YouTube views or topics started about them on TalkBass.

Sheesh. Post a vid of yourselves and you can get analyzed.
Dude has chops. Period. Like the style or not. Deal with it.

If he's just happy playing at home and posting videos to YouTube then that's fantastic good for him. Funny you should say that, he was a member of a well-known death metal band called The Faceless for 3 years and has worked Chris Letchford of Scale The Summit. He's got two albums worth of solo material and it isn't all annoyingly fast slap slicks - certainly not just some guy posting youtube videos. Rest assured, he can get gigs if he wants to.

You didn't ask us to judge based on his whole body of work.. you asked for an opinion of this one video. If you don't like the answer first make sure you have asked the right question.
And if you don't want opinions don't ask for them.
