I've never been a compression guy, but we've got a few places I can use it and I think the X/D will also benefit for it. Apparently, I dive into the deep end right off. This is my first 'pedal compressor' although I have a handful of rack units.

I really like both those Z's. I don't know why, but I have a fondness for the green/yellow burst thing on Dingwalls and the Z-2 has a lovely quilt. Sorry it didn't grow a 3rd pickup though.

I have never liked the sound of them, nor the feel of them. I've occasionally tried them in the past, and they never last more than an hour or two. I'm a round wound guy for life.

I tried for a long time. The best I could find was ground-wounds and they were pretty damn close to rounds anyway by feel, so why not just do rounds. So, yeah, use what you like is probably the best answer there.

Who puts flats on a fretless?

For what it's worth, Sheldon designed Dingwalls for a modern sound, that involves round wounds. You think the Lambourghini of bass should be rocking some white walls? Fuhgeddaboudit. If we ever see Dingwall flats, it is because he acquiesced to demand.

HAHA When we see these bases, it is real easy to look at all the possibilities. This is why I agonize over color choices and specs (sometimes for weeks or months) when I purchase these for re-sale. And I am a particular fan of that blue I was referring to, and I had actually been considering a red-burst as well, although I do think the bass you posted in the middle is one of the most unique Z's out there, simply stunning.

Yeah, I am not a fan of compression while playing live nor am I a fan of flats. Although when I ran pro sound I ALWAYS used compression on the bass. But on the stage it almost always feels like it suks the life out of my style, as I depend on dynamics for a part of that style. And your comment about the 3rd pickup; I think for the most part most of us could be satisfied with 2. But that 3rd one does open up more variability, and nowadays it is "why not" - I will never order any more two pickup versions except if someone specifies that, and this includes Combustion/NG2. And, I agree with you, I haven't seen anyone do the yellow to green burst like Dingwall. I love that color.

It also has some features to get rid of the 'crush the life, kill my highs' thing. It has a parallel dry control (mix back in your original, so you can get the tightness but retain your vibe) and it has an adjustable HPF for the sidechain, so you can roll it up and not have your deeper lows trigger the compression at the detriment of the rest of your tone.

I'm generally a 'one setting' guy on my basses, so I could certainly get away with 2 pickups...but if you've got the option, do it. Then you can have more choices of your 'one setting' and/or you can maybe have a few others too.

I had a set of La Bella flats made for my ABZ6, but I found the B and E were just too thumpy, all thud with no sustain. The A-C sounded really good, though. Also ran TI flats on the SP5 for a while but eventually decided to go back to rounds for stuff where I needed more brightness. The secret to the TIs sounding good, I think, was that I got a brand new B and ran that with a well used E-G set I’ve had for a few years.

How are you powering that board, Bill? What’s the next step, new cabling? A bypass loop strip? A bigger board with more of everything?!

I have one of these now. Mounted really nicely under the Classic 2. seems to have a goodly amount of juice. A good chunk of my board is filled up with non-effect utility pedals though.

-IEM pack
-Dunlop Volume/expression pedal
-Switching loop for the volume part of the V/E

I've been fussing a bit with layout and what's staying or not but overall the structure is mostly remaining the same. I did grab that VFE Bumblebee, which I thought would be pretty ideal, but I didn't love it (goes back in it's original box and on the shelf for now). I removed the mini-7-band EQ for now, but may put that back for 'clean' filter. ; and I ditched the little echo. Sticking with the Mooer Slow-Gear clone for swells. Which leaves:
-Iron Ether Divaricator ->
Dr. Scientist Frazz Dazzler v2 ->
Iron Ether Xerograph Deluxe ->
cheap mini analog delay (until my Noisemaker Nebula is fixed)->
Ibanez BC-9 bi-mode chorus-> out

Trying to decide if I drop the OC-2 into the mix...and/or if I find a synth to add. I'm also pondering a Particle.

The Cali76CB is a nice compressor; I had mine before the Xerograph when I was trying to get it to work but didn’t change it’s settings to see if that helped. I’d best try that too.

The beauty of the Truetone PSUs is that they don't give you a bunch of AC outlets or hard-wired 18v outlets that you can't use without special adaptors and cables. Also, as long as you aren't exeeding the maximum mA output of the entire PSU, you can power anything from any jack; e.g. you could run a 500mA digital pedal off of a 50mA-labelled jack as long as you stayed under the 3000mA or however much the CS12 is rated for in total. I'm currently shopping for a PSU for the little board I brought to the UK, but once you start including shipping and VAT fees, prices quickly get out of hand.

Synth pedals are a mixed bag, and it really depends on what kinds of sounds you're after. The Bananana Matroyshka is pretty popular right now and very small; the archetype for modern synth pedals is the Future Impact; there's also the Iron Ether FMeron if you wanna kinda sound like a DX7. With what you've already got, I'd say a solid octaver will work really nicely in conjunction with your other pedals to cop synthy sounds.

I’ve been trying to hunt down clips of the magick fuzz and all I can find is guitar demos. I see you’ve got one. How would you describe it compared to some other fuzzes. Thinking about getting on. Toss up between that or a TFR. Only have room for one. Just curious because I haven’t seen anyone else around here that uses that fuzz.
