If you close your eyes and just listen, all basses are black anyway. But yeah, purple rocks!

Qatar Airways says that oversize instruments are OK but the maximum length is 47 1/4". I've shopped for cases that are that short and can't find any. Dingwalls are 46" long, so there's barely room for a case...

Are custom cases a thing? Can I afford one? I'd rather not need one.

Do not, do not, do not, do not! check your bass. Just assume that your bass is going to get destroyed. Instruments get damaged in transit when cases are not relatched properly, and instruments fall out, or when the baggage handlers just DGAF and put too much weight on them.

Buy a seat for the bass and carry it in a gigbag. If the gigbag ends up being too long, get a ratchet strap and use it to squeeze it down (there's usually enough leeway at the head end of most bags to compress it a bit).

If you're a hardcase kind of guy, too bad; buy a gigbag and just keep an eye on your bass when it's going in a car or van or whatever. I moved two Dingwall's in their gigbags inside a golfclub caddy bag to the UK from Michigan. My basses never left my side except when I had to use the bathroom on the plane. I'll be doing this again in a month or two to go from Dublin to Los Angeles.

Yeah, I love mine too. Great color. I actually have a thing against black basses and prefer more colorful options, and wasn't sure if the Plum Crazy was going to be too dark for me, but I like it.

I mean, to each their own, but you’re also relying on a bass to replace it being available should it get shaging destroyed, for the insurance to be paid out in the first place, and for all of that to be sorted out in a timely manner.

BTW, TSA Pre-Check does not mean no one opens it. That just means that they don't open it in front of you. The only way to absolutely guarantee nobody opens it is to leave it at home.

Was there any kind of discount on tickets for this purpose? IIRC the last time I flew to the UK (back in 1997) it wasn't all that cheap just for a seat for myself.

For this kind of stuff I'd totally consider finding a super cheap but somewhat decent replacement for the trip, if it were a short gigging situation... Or dependingly, plan on picking up a 5 while I'm away and either ship it back or sell it cheap on the exit.

We've got a couple international holds on our books, and I'm eyeballing them nervously.

Thanks for the heads-up on that. Was thinking about Global Entry, etc.

I've googled for a pre-flight TSA baggage inspection and it does not exist. I would pay to have my luggage pre-inspected in front of me and then tagged. That's a hell of a business opportunity for anyone with enough bucks to deal with not only our government but also all the other governments for the return flight. Global Entry is perfectly positioned to do exactly that, I wish they would.

I was told I could write the ticket off as a business expense, but since I’m not here for work, I couldn’t do it. Given the cost of flight cases, it really wasn’t that much more for a seat and a massive piece of mind.

There are no discounts. Period. Trust me, I looked.

I looked at the issue of checked baggage damage and it looks like it does happen but it's a minority. The vast majority of instruments ship just fine in a good case as checked baggage.

Of course, today you have to wonder if the positive posts are not astro turf by professional reputation managers like big corps have.
