Some Z3's have the pickups tightly grouped, like arrowson's.
Others have a gap between the middle pup and the neck pup.

What are the advantages to each configuration?

The advantage to the tight grouping is you can get one like it!!! Not so much the other.

All jokes aside the older configuration with the narrower pick ups spaced apart had the SF1 pick ups like the Leland sklar only in a wisely positioned 3 pick up configuration. I’ve seen only one that used the larger pick up shells in the same spaced config.

new to the forum, hi all!
I seriously want to buy a Dingwall but I'm stuck on which model to pick: the AB1, the NG2 or the Combustion.

* I'm still in uni, so cash is fairly sparce.
* I'm a fan of a lot of musical genres: jazz, funk, metal and ambient, just to name a few
* I am a huge idiot when it comes to electronics. Seriously. So I have no idea if the EMG, the Glockenklang or the DarkGlass Tone capsule is what I need on the preamp section.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If this isn't the right thread, could I trouble any of you to point me to the right one?

A secondhand NG2/5 is a fantastic bass and will probably be the cheapest available. As a secondhand, it will hold value fairly well, too. It's not exactly a p-bass sound (more modern jazz) so may not be as comfortable with funk as other things, but you'll probably be fine.

there are only a handful of 3s in the world and they won't be around in numbers until end of the yearish. The 2 is a fine bass (I have one) and Dingwall are planning to make an upgrade to 3 pickups available.

Check out the classifieds here and elsewhere for NG2s, although watch out for people asking near-new price for them.

I think the preamp is fine and interetsing, but intend to get an ABZ with a glock for variety. You can use the bass in passive mode too and add your own tone shaping in a pedal if you like.

That doesn't seem right but I'll keep an eye open for that.

Paint swirl, solid colors, burst, natural finishes. It's all good. But you got to admit, a Z3 exotic top under the stage lights is majestic...probably the best photo to date of my Z3 in action.

If you have the funds the Canadians like the ABI are fantastic basses. But finding the color/configuration you want may be difficult on the used market and if you order a new one there is quite a long wait time unless you find a dealer who has one already on order.

Pres: Difficult to describe but I will give you my impressions.

Canadian Glockenklang = Pristine, Clarity, smooth extended top end response. Appropriate, IMO, for most any genre. Add a pedal for grit.

Darkglass available in NG2/NG3 and in the Canadian basses: Has a low mid and high mid versus a "traditional" low, mid, high. This gives one the control over the all important mids. It is a clean pre but can give a bit of grit/growl and is probably considered the top of the lineup especially if you are a rocker. Metal guys love it. But on the other hand, due to versatility, it can really be used for most any genre music. We have seen Country players that like ita lot We sell many more basses with the Darkglass than the other pres. The low mid, high mid control is so nice as this give an almost unprecedented control over these important frequencies for bass guitar. It is my favorite pre for rock.

Combustion with EMG. I have to say that, IMO, as much as I love the Darkglass pre in the NG2/NG3, the Combustion is a bit more versatile bass over the NG2 /NG3 with the Darkglass. The output is clean and smooth. If a person wants to play Jazz, Clean Country, or simply likes the low, mid, high control, this is a nice pre. But on the other hand, it is entirely appropriate for rock. And if a person just wants that Darkglass growl, simply add a Darkglass pedal. We sell far more NG2/NG3 that Combustion, but IMO folks should strongly consider the Combustion as a bit more versatile a bass/pre.

Now NG2/NG3. You will probably only fine new NG3s as they have been on the market for a short time. We have had a few NG3s and actually were able to do a bit of comparison. To me, there is an obvious difference. We were listening to these last weekend at a guitar show where we were displaying several NG2/NG3 basses. One comment by a player when he tried both, and also what I heard, was an immediate increase in presence with a bit more pronounced and clearer low end. But this was not an extensive comparison/test but just initial impression.

IMO, as a bass player, I really wouldn't mind, and would actually be delighted, being on a stage with any of the configurations as I like all of them.

Ask your store what basses they have incoming. They may have one to your liking that is incoming soon but not on display. If they accept deposits my advice if you find the color and configuration you like that they have incoming, go ahead and nail it down, as these basses move fast.

It depends on how long the bass has been on order. Once it goes into build status the order cannot be changed.

We have had 4 NG3s come through and have more incoming next week and more way before end of year. But yes, they are rare, but can be found.

There was going to be the option to buy the kit from Dingwall to convert the 2x combustions (and NGs) to 3x, is that still the case?
I know it will only really apply to the round end pickup combustion models which are all routed for 3x.

Since I have the kits on-order, I checked on them last week and was told April/May ETA.

My regular Combustion is already 3x, I’m not sure the NG2 is a keeper yet though.
I really would like a super series so if one comes up in a configuration I like the NG is most likely to get the boot. Nice to know the options are available.

Ah, I have a Super P5 next to the NG, providing a pretty significant contrast. One day, I'll get an ABZ 6/3 order filled, and that'll be a nice mix of passive, active, long, medium, and darkglass/glock. Sitting a combustion 3 next to a NG-2 would be interesting though.
