Well, I took the plunge. My Stingray is gone and my Candy Tangerine/maple fretboard Combustion will be here Tuesday. I ordered it with an uninstalled white pearloid pick guard so now the question is, do I install it or leave it off? I'm going back and forth on it.

The new Combustion came in yesterday as scheduled. I was busy last night and didn't even get a chance to plug it up but I am liking it already. First impressions: The color is darker than what I was expecting but it is still gorgeous. It is lighter than what I was expecting as well. Granted, almost anything would feel light after the Stingray. I love the neck profile. The setup feels right on, right out of the box. It really only takes a minute or two of playing to get used to these fanned frets. I can't wait to see what this thing sounds like tonight.

I snapped a couple phone pics in bad lighting last night just for kicks but I will get some good ones with an actual camera with good lighting in the next day or two. I'm still going back and forth on the pickguard. Let me know what you think.

+1 That is a great color, and IMHO, the pickguard really works well on that bass.

Haha, I can appreciate that. I just really like the "retro" vibe that the PG adds. I get the same feeling....I don't really want to cover up the tangerine. But then I look at it on there again and just like it. I'm definitely going to leave it off for a while but it might make it's way onto the bass one of these days.

How did you end up with a painted headstock on a Combustion? Special order?
Beautiful color though. I love my sunburst Combustion V2.

Bass Central happened to have it in stock. I might be wrong but I think it was the only one they had with a matching headstock. That was a big part of what sold me on this particular bass. I am loving this thing so far.

Upon closer inspection, they have a matte black in stock with matching headstock right now. I would like to see a candy green or candy apple red with that option though.

This one is old school, November 99 birthdate, 2000 Namm show bass. Awesome with Bart PU and pre, but it's going new school with FD3 4-L in the bridge and the new FD3 Ptone in the neck. Droolers drool!

bart preamp which sounds pretty cool. I am upgrading in stages, pickups first, then the Glockenklang.

I really like the white pearl guard on the Candy Tangerine. Adds some more interest to the lines of the guitar, and great contrast.

Will the pickguard stay in place without screws? If so, I wouldn't to drill holes for it so you can go back and forth.

Maybe you could stick it on with some 3M command strips:

I like the pickguard on - but the removable option is nice...

That's a good idea. I'll see if I can find some ultra thin 2-sided tape so there is no visible gap at the edges of the pickguard.
