Any experience with that here? Or, is it a "Once you go Dingwall you never go back" kind of thing?

Hi there and congrats on your first Dingwall, that pickguard is not tort, but amber, niiiiice.

As for that statement, "once you go Dingwall... etc" no mate, that's a load of old boulderdash.

There is always plenty of room for classic basses in a real man's colletction. Dingwall's are superb but they don't cause me fanboi effect and I have a wide outlook on life with everything as my collections shows you here below:

Hi all.

Im just dropping buy to share that I just put down my deposit for my ABZ with a wenge fb. (gigity) Needless to say how excited I am!

I want to point out that I'm going to make a strong effort to not come to this thread to often due to the AMAZING pics posted. Threads like this could be the end of my relationship. :D

Oooh, wenge FB ABZs. Can't wait to see that :)

And yeah, I've bought a Combustion even though I have an AB-II. The AB-II is still here and my first and favorite child; but the Combustion does certain things better, no doubt about it. And it's a looker too.

Played an Afterburner II at Tone in Mtl. the other day, through a '66 Portaflex, first time I got a chance to try a Dingwall.

Fabulous instrument, one of the first boutique type basses I've played that made sense to me (I'm a passive P and J kind of guy normally) for my needs.

Took a few minutes at most to feel comfortable on the neck, and the responsiveness and feel of the bass was very very pleasant. Just great tone, that preamp is something else. I don't usually play fivers either but the neck felt great and the B string was amazing sounding.

Great basses Sheldon, makes me proud to be a Canuck.

I've had my Dingwall for 17 years and it's been my primary bass for the duration. These days I'm owning and playing some different basses now and then as I'm making an effort to get comfortable on a 4 string again. Going back and forth from fanned to standard scale is truly a non-issue.

I had the blend favoring the neck pickup(both in series) and also added some low mids.

On friday I'll record a video showing all the different configurations.

Got my Combustion last night!:hyper:

Definitely need some new strings for it though. I know there has been a ton of discussion about strings, here and on the Dingwall site. But I want TB user opinions please. I've got it narrowed down to 2 choices: A) Stock Dingwall SS's -or- B) Payson SS's.

I've heard good about both. I'm used to using DR hi-beams or fat-beams, they don't fit, and really want a similar feeling, sounding, and long-lasting (the DR's last a long time) string for my Combustion. So, what's the consensus out there? Either of these similar to the DR's?

Also, if I want the Payson's, how do I order? Just email them? Can't seem to find them on any online stores yet.

I used to equip my basses with fat beams (40-100). I was pretty much convinced they were THE strings...then I got my ABZ, put a fresh set of DW strings and BOOM! Best strings I've ever used and the gauges are very comfy IMO.

I haven't used payson's, but people seem to like them. The tension is a bit higher than DW's according some people from the forum.

Yes, perfectly. They are very specifically designed to fit Fanned basses 37"-34", preferably Dingwall's.

Matter of fact the B sting is too long to fit an XB75 which is 35.25" scale.

Thanks for all the input guys. I ended up ordering a set of the Paysons. First, because they match the string dia. that I'm used to. And 2nd, they came in at about $8 cheaper a set then any of the Voodoo/Dingwalls that I could find anywhere on the net. Thanks Blues Cat!

I hadn't really thought about, or anticipated the $8 - $10 increase in price for a set of fanned fret strings . . . but, I guess it makes sense . . . and if they have a life anywhere near that of the DR's then l'll be happy.

I don't have an ABI, but I guess it's response should be pretty much the same that of an ABZ.
The pickups are very responsive and the rotary switch is a nice feature.
I'd say you should play it for a while and take it to some gigs before considering installing a preamp.

I installed an Audere preamp to my ABZ and added switches for series/parallel to each pickup, but I just wanted to have lots of sounds available, because I'm keeping this bass for a loooong time (if it's not forever).

A few posts above I said I was going to record a video showing all the configurations, but I got sick. I'll try to do it this week.

Very strange and difficult comparison, the Bongo doesn't go passive and the AB1 does both. I have not owned or tried an AB1 but... I have 3 other Dingwalls as per my signature, the ABZ and the ABII don't sound anything like a Bongo but strangely enough the only one that can emulate a bongo sound is my Super J with a J and a P pickups when I play both pickups in parallel, not series, in active mode with both Bass and Treble EQ well beefed up gives me a sound very very close to a Bongo HH with the pickup pan in the middle (I owned a Bongo HH(piezo) so I can remember that sound very well.)

Strange huh? 2 single coil pickups in parallel actually sound like a HH Bongo... I couldn't believe it but even our sound guy keeps reminding me that it sounds just like the Bongo did
