Sorry for the delay response on this.

I’ll do my best here.

Perhaps less articulate at flat. I found that I could go higher on the dial with mids and treb. Bass often sat around 4.
Smooth. Not as “hot” but still very pronounced. Ie. still a very clear and defined tone in a LOUD metal band.
As mentioned by Dingwall. They are higher output on the lows and highs so I guess that would naturally give you a more scooped sound. I always had the glockenklang active so my comparisons where in glock utilization.

The FD3s are very clinical IMO. I love how honest they are. The SFs were less of that?!? More round? Ugh. Words.

Well there’s my attempt of the morning at using descriptive words. Off to work to go huff glue now......

Quite taken with the middle PU on the NG3 too. I guess that would be the same as soloing the neck PU on the NG2. Am I wrong to wish I could try different combos of the NG3 neck PU? Maybe with the middle? Maybe that'd be too much mud.

Hi All,

I currently own an early NG-2 5 string. It really is a cool bass. I love the Darkglass pre and think the pickup placement and switching capabilities are really nice. Now there is the NG-3. I tried a D-bird with the same pickup configuration as the NG-3 about a year ago and was very impressed.

For those of you who have played both, which did you prefer and why? I like the idea of a Mopar Purple NG-3 5 string but should I just stand pat with the NG-2.

My experience.
I had 3 NG2s. They sound killer and are fantastic basses but I just never could bond with them. I think this was more because of my playing style vs tone. I had a combustion I loved way more. I just parted with my NG3 but this time for different reasons.

It was an amazing instrument. Again not primarily due to tonal options(my fav tone was middle pick up soloed) 3 on is awesome but perhaps overpowering for most applications for my needs.

I liked it more honestly, just cause it had a great neck and with the 3x pick ups it felt more natural and at home to my other basses. My only reason for selling was it was excess. I wanted to keep it but had no justifiable reason.

I guess what my thoughts on this are:
If you are happy with your tones there is no need to upgrade.
If you are comfortable on it there is no need to upgrade.

Comfort was the main reason I preferred the 3 over the 2. Sure there are different tones to be had but I don’t think I’m a tone chaser anymore. Awesome is awesome and I’m content sound wise with my arsenal. Feel/comfort is my primary driver these days.

I’m almost certain I’ll own another in the future. Probably a sixer and hopefully I’ll be financially set to hold an excessive amount of basses but really, I’ll be back up to 4 in a month or so and how does one even find the time to enjoy each of them.

Which ever you decide watch @Bassheart365 cuz he’ll be putting something amazing up for sale only to waffle on his decision but then potentially post it again.

(You know I’m just teasing ya but I saw the black NG3 and couldn’t resist..... wth??!)

Yeah you have me figured out @AB Nate :thumbsup: I have a FretTrax modified NG2 and my initial impression once got my NG3 back from Mo's Shop was that the tonal difference didn't warrant owning both, and the NG2 ain't going anywhere because having FretTrax is like having a musical Disneyland in my music room. Then I played the NG3 more and changed my mind. Could happen again! I did come to my senses (again) on my amazing Ken Smith 6 string. Selling that would be like selling a Stadivarius. But I have an NG3 6 string coming so stay tuned....:D

I wasn't able to spend much time with the 3X models when I was helping players demo them at @bebass 's last show, but this is the NG-2 that floats my boat:

I have FDV pickups in it presently, but the FD-3's also sound fantastic. Reason one not to go 3X? Knowing me, I would always be soloing that middle pickup. :D Two - the 'all on' would probably be too much for me also. If I were to go 3X, I'd want an Afterburner, but being so satisfied with the tone and feel of the above beauty, which I would have to sell, I just don't feel the need strongly enough to (spend the money & wait two years) make the move...
