Thanks - yeah, it fueled my GAS big time as well. In fact, seeing the promo photo of the bass in late 2017 was what got me interested in Dingwalls in the first place, and the purple D-Bird was the very first Dingwall bass I ever got to touch. It is over-the-top cool, in every possible way - weight, balance, tone, feel, looks, overall quality. That said, I have pretty much fully switched over to playing only 5-strings, and as such, the D-Bird is just sitting lonely it that beautiful shiny case, dying to get played, in case somebody wants to let it take flight...

So what is it with you guys that you don't like appreciation shown for a design that Sheldon actually came up with a built.
He built it, we like it but your on us for liking it???? :(

I think someone was learning CAD and design software at the time. ;) They came up with a series of mock-ups of pseudo-super-series instruments based upon other classics, which had been recently released (a few years back. Could it conceivably happen? Well, D-Birds happened. So you never know. I just know what happens when others have tried to do riffs on EBMM products.

...is the reverse of what I'm saying. I LOVE Sheldon's design and engineering. My argument is that his stuff is more beautiful and functional than stuff like the Stingray. ;)

Yeah, the D-Bird surprised me in two ways. One was that he did it, and two was that he took a design I didn't care for and made it look so good. Not being a Stingray fan, the mockup struck me the same way, great look on a bass I never cared for.

I like it myself. The NG definitely covers the territory well but I have respect for the stingray to begin with and although I don’t LOVE them I definitely like them quite possibly more then a jazz and definitely more then a P.

At one point I believe that I had said I liked my Ray more then the NG I had at the time and I’ll stick to that. It was a top notch ray!

AFAIC they fall in a similar category as a J or P. Much respect to the original design and Sheldon would create an amazing stingray if he was to “redesign” it. .... which once again..... he kind of did.... except the scale length.

It could be said the looks are boring of the stingray but the same could be said for a precision... and somehow he made it so I like them....

Lots of great tone coming from them and while not a Stingray fan, I really like their Sterlings. I'd sure like to see Sheldon's take on some smaller basses and I'm hopeful he may even come up with a short scale someday. Something like 28-32" scale four stringer could be pretty cool.

What about just using the Z2/NG2 pickup placement on an existing Super series model? I haven't seen it done, but it doesn't sound unreasonable.

Heck, aren't there a few Super Js with the 3x configuration? Seems like sonically, those would already have most of the "Dingray" built in, just without the matching aesthetics.

Sure. That’s probably the closest you could get with existing options. Obviously the body would be a J bod but the scale would be more relevant and like you said. A 3x config on the appropriate pick up selector setting should do it. Definitely have not seen a 2x MM style pick up positioning on a J yet though.

I think that is swaying away from the original topic though as it is about stingray styling not just tone. And with that an NG is closer to a stingray 5 string body. Major Dingwall revisions aside of course.

As a former Dingwall owner and current StingRay owner, I'm positive that Sheldon could "redo" a 'Ray and make it better. Having said that, I'm sure we all realize how lucky we are that he was willing to take a (very successful)shot at revamping a few iconic designs. He didn't need to do that, but he took a shot, and knocked it out of the park. Part of the reason I subscribe to this thread is to see how Sheldon implements his ideas into his own designs. I'd much rather see an all-new, all-Dingwall design. I'm sure there's plenty more magic to be found in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan...;):thumbsup:

On another, semi-related note, Fender's take on the StingRay, was to slap a MM-style pickup into a J-body and call it a Flea Sig.
Fender Flea Signature Active Jazz Bass - Satin Shell Pink

I love Flea, and I do love the Shell Pink, but, Flea should just suck it up and go back to MusicMan...
